The Sachsenpokal is a club competition for Saxon football teams, which is organized annually by the Saxon Football Association . The cup is currently being held under the name Wernesgrüner Sachsenpokal .

As a result of the reorganization of the “football landscape” after the political change in 1989, the competition has only been played since the 1990/91 season. In the first competition only twelve national league teams (at that time 4th division) and four lower-class teams took part.

Game mode

Eligible are the Saxon teams of the 3rd league , the regional league (4th division), the Oberliga (5th division), the Sachsenliga (6th division) and the regional division (7th division) as well as the cup winners of the 13 districts. Since the 2009/10 season, no second representatives of participating teams are allowed to take part in the Saxony Cup, the Chemnitzer FC II and FSV Budissa Bautzen II had a special permit for the last time.

The teams play the cup winners in the knockout system , who can then take part in the DFB Cup in the following year . If the cup winner is already qualified through his league membership, the final opponent will be nominated. Likewise, from the 2008/09 season, second representatives of professional teams will no longer be allowed to participate in the DFB Cup, in the event of a qualification the defeated finalist would also be eligible to start.

:

1 The right to start was exercised by the first team.
2Since the state cup winner FC Erzgebirge Aue also qualified for the DFB Cup by placing in the 3rd division, the vice-cup winner FSV Zwickau exercised the right to start as the Saxon state cup winner. Both clubs were eliminated in the first main round.

Of the 29 teams that have qualified for the DFB Cup via the Sachsenpokal so far, eight have survived the first main round there:
FC Sachsen Leipzig and Chemnitzer FC managed to do this twice (FC Sachsen Leipzig 1993/94 only by one bye), the Bischofswerdaer FV 08, the VFC Plauen, RB Leipzig and the BSG Chemie Leipzig once each. The Bischofswerdaer FV 08 reached the 3rd main round in the 1992/93 season, but benefited from a bye in the 1st main round. Incidentally, the then 3rd main round as the round of the last 32 teams corresponded to the 2nd main round in today's cup mode, which has been used (with only minor changes) since the 1994/95 season. No Saxon regional cup representative has yet been able to move into a DFB Cup round of 16 (as of August 2019).

Record cup winners and finals

The record winner of the Sachsenpokal is Chemnitzer FC with 11 wins in 15 finals, of which the second team of Chemnitzer FC managed one final.

So far, with FC Erzgebirge Aue (2000 to 2002) and FC Sachsen Leipzig (1993 to 1995), two teams have won the cup in three consecutive seasons, and Chemnitz FC (2010 to 2015) even managed to reach the final six times in a row .
