The Saxon State Cup 2016/17 was the 27th edition of the Saxon State Cup (sponsor name: Wernesgrüner Sachsenpokal ) for men in amateur football. The national cup winner qualified for the DFB-Pokal 2017/18 .

The defending champion FC Erzgebirge Aue was not eligible to participate as a second division team this season . The competition opened on August 5th, 2016 with the match between SV Liebertwolkwitz and SV Bad Lausick in 1990 (3-0). The regional division 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig and the third division and record title holder Chemnitzer FC qualified for the final, which was played for the first time on May 24, 2017 in Leipzig's Bruno-Plache Stadium . The Chemnitz team decided the final with a 1: 2 away win and thus secured their ninth state cup win.

Qualified teams and mode

The following teams qualified for the Saxon State Cup 2016/17 : All Saxon teams in the 3rd League 2016/17 , the Regionalliga Nordost 2016/17 , the Oberliga Nordost 2016/17 , the Sachsenliga 2016/17 , the Landesklasse Sachsen 2016/17, as well as the thirteen district and city cup winners of the 2015/16 season. Exceptions are second teams of higher class clubs.

The Saxon State Cup will be played in knockout mode, in the event of a tie after 90 minutes, extra time and penalty shoot-outs will follow. The pairings are drawn before each round. The team in the lower class always has home rights, otherwise the order of the drawing at the time of the draw decides (the team with home rights can, however, waive home rights in favor of the other team). The home right in the final will be drawn separately in the event of a pairing of two equal-class teams. In the first main round, only the teams qualified via the Sachsenliga, the state class and the district cups played. In the 2nd main round, the Saxon top division teams intervened in the competition, in the 3rd main round the Saxon third and regional division had to compete for the first time.

The following shows the course of the competition from the quarter-finals.

The Saxony Cup winner in the DFB Cup 2017/18

For the first main round, Chemnitzer FC pulled the "big ticket" and met the record winner of the DFB Cup, FC Bayern Munich . Chemnitz was able to keep the game open for a long time, but ultimately had to admit defeat to the favorites 0: 5. Thus, for the third time in a row, the Saxon state cup winner failed to reach the second main round.
