Benjamin "Benny" Kirsten (born June 2, 1987 in Riesa , GDR ) is a German soccer goalkeeper . He is under contract with 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig .

Player career

After his father Ulf moved from SG Dynamo Dresden to Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the summer of 1990 , Kirsten grew up first in Leverkusen and then in Bergisch Gladbach in the Rhineland, and from then on went through all the youth teams of the “factory club”. During his time with the club's B youth team, Kirsten considered quitting football, as Leverkusen's goalkeeping coach Rüdiger Vollborn said he would “never make it into a fourth division squad”, but he did then youth leader Michael Reschke advised against.

In the summer of 2006, contrary to the expectations of many, he was accepted into the squad of the second team at Bayer Leverkusen, which was coached by his father. He ran twice in the regional league for the team.

Since his father had advised him "there time alone to try," Kirsten joined in the second half of the season 2007/08 to the Oberliga side SV Waldhof Mannheim . His shirt number was 32, but he was not used as a back-up for Daniel Tsiflidis . After not ruling out the end of his career, he moved to the third division Dynamo Dresden for the 2008/09 season . Since he was initially only planned for the second team, Kirsten trained in the club to become a sports and fitness clerk.

Nevertheless, he made his professional debut on May 2, 2009 (34th matchday) in the 0-1 away defeat against Fortuna Düsseldorf . In June 2009 Kirsten won the Saxony Cup with the second team from Dynamo Dresden . After that final, he was banned for two months for lighting a Bengali fire after the final whistle . Kirsten was basically used as a goalkeeper in the first team, but also played as a striker in the second team at times .

On the 25th matchday of the 2010/11 season , Kirsten was promoted by coach Matthias Maucksch to the goalkeeper of the first team, replacing the previous number one Axel Keller . In the remaining 14 games, Kirsten did not concede a goal in seven games and thus contributed to Dynamo Dresden reaching third place in the table at the end of the season and moving up to the 2nd Bundesliga after winning the relegation games over VfL Osnabrück . Due to this, the club extended Kirsten's contract, which was expiring at the end of the season, by two more years until 2013.

After he was out for a long time at the beginning of the 2011/12 season due to a pubic bone inflammation and had lost his regular place, Kirsten benefited from the injuries of his rivals Dennis Eilhoff and Wolfgang Hesl during the season . From the 22nd matchday he was again the goalkeeper and remained in the remaining twelve games of the season five times without a goal. On August 9, 2012, Kirsten's contract was prematurely extended by two more years to 2015. Also in the 2012/13 season Kirsten was able to defend his regular place against the newly signed keeper Florian Fromlowitz . He was named the best-rated second division player by the kicker sports magazine . Furthermore, Kirsten distinguished himself as a “penalty killer” during the season and saved a total of five out of seven penalties .

In the first half of the 2013/14 season he was able to maintain his regular place against Fromlowitz and the newly signed Nico-Stéphàno Pellatz . Towards the end of the first half of the season, however, Kirsten noticed frequent mistakes, so that he was replaced by Markus Scholz at the beginning of the second half of the season . After his hand injury in mid-March 2014, he returned to the Dresden goal and from then on showed good performances again. Nevertheless, they rose at the end of the season after a 2: 3 defeat against direct relegation competitor Arminia Bielefeld on matchday 34.

On August 30, 2014 (7th matchday), Kirsten completed his 100th league game for Dynamo Dresden in a 2-0 win against SV Wehen Wiesbaden . On April 22, 2015, he and the club announced that his contract, which expired after the 2014/15 season, would not be extended. On the last match day on May 23, 2015 in a 2-1 win against FC Hansa Rostock , he played his last game for Dynamo Dresden. After that he was initially without a club. At the end of August 2015, the Dutch first division club NEC Nijmegen announced the commitment of Kirsten for half a year. This commitment ended about four weeks before the end of the contract due to the termination of the contract by Nijmegen. The reason for this was a "breach of trust" because Kirsten had not waited until after the end of the contract to have a knee operation.

In mid-November he signed a contract with the fourth division club 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig, which was valid until June 30, 2017 . In May 2017 it extended for another year until the end of the 2017/18 season.

Coaching career

Benjamin Kirsten was already the coach of the U-11 young goalkeeper when he was at Bayer 04 Leverkusen . Even here, he was certified to be good at dealing with children and young people. After moving to Dynamo Dresden in July 2008, he coached the Dresden youth goalkeepers.

In February 2016 Benjamin Kirsten announced the founding of a goalkeeping school together with Thomas Köhler .
