Earl of Rosse
Earl of Rosse is a British hereditary title of nobility created twice in the Peerage of Ireland .
The Earls family seat is Birr Castle in the town of Birr , County Offaly in Ireland .
Awards
The title was first awarded in 1718 to Richard Parsons, 2nd Viscount Rosse , a well-known Freemason of his time. It went out with the death of his son in 1764.
The second bestowal took place in 1806 to Laurence Harman Parsons, 1st Viscount Oxmantown . He had been a Representative Peer in the House of Lords since 1800 , having previously been a member of the Irish House of Commons for a long time . In view of the fact that the first earl had no son, the title was given with a special note that, in the absence of sons, it could also be passed on to the descendants in the male line of a nephew. This was also the case when the earl died.
Subordinate title
The earls of the first bestowal carried the minor title Viscount Rosse , which had been bestowed on the father of the first earl in 1681. This title also expired in 1764.
The current Earl of Rosse bears the subordinate title of Baron Oxmantown (created 1792), which was bestowed on the first Earl. It is marked with the same succession note as the earliest dignity.
Both titles are also part of the Peerage of Ireland. The respective title heir carries the courtesy title of Baron Oxmantown .
Other titles
The later first earl of the second award had been raised to Viscount Oxmantown in 1795 . However, since this title was awarded without the special succession note by barony and earl dignity, it expired on his death in 1741.
The great-grandfather of the first earl of the first award had already been raised to baronet , of Bellamont, in 1620 . This title, which belonged to the Baronetage of Ireland , also expired in 1741.
The current Earl is also a Baronet, of Birr Castle. The award of this title took place in 1677 in the same baronage to an ancestor of the second earl.
