Wolfgang Hesl (born January 13, 1986 in Nabburg ) is a former German professional football goalkeeper who is currently active in the amateur field .

Career

Professional career

Born in Upper Palatinate, Hesl, who cites Oliver Kahn as a sporting role model , switched to Hamburger SV in January 2004 as an A-youth , whose offer he preferred to one from FC Bayern Munich . As a youth player, he made his first appearances for the second team of HSV in the Regionalliga Nord . In the 2005/06 season , Hesl was the goalkeeper of the reserve team and remained so in the following season.

Before the 2006/07 season, Hesl moved up to the professional team, but was initially only the third goalkeeper behind Sascha Kirschstein and Stefan Wächter and was therefore still used in the regional league team. In the 2007/08 season he was the regular number two behind regular goalkeeper Frank Rost and played his first Bundesliga appearance on May 17, 2008 (34th matchday), when he was substituted on 15 minutes before the end in the 7-0 home win over Karlsruher SC . His second outing for the professionals graduated Hesl almost nine months later, on January 6, 2009 in a friendly match against AC Milan , with whom he in the penalty shootout saved a penalty. Afterwards Hesl only came during the preparatory phase of the 2009/10 season at the T-Home Cup for use and had in the two games against Bayern Munich and VfB Stuttgart tight at the back. Hesl played his first international competitive game on August 20, 2009 in a 5-1 away win over EA Guingamp in qualifying for the 2009/10 UEFA Europa League . Then he was used again in the 0-1 away defeat against Hapoel Tel Aviv in the last group game. Hesl played his second Bundesliga game for HSV on February 28, 2010 (24th matchday) in the 0-1 away defeat against FC Bayern Munich, when he came on for the injured Frank Rost in the second half.

After Jaroslav Drobný was signed in the summer of 2010, Hesl was only the third goalkeeper and therefore switched to the Austrian Bundesliga for SV Ried on loan on the last day of the transfer period to represent their injured and also German goalkeeper Thomas Gebauer . He made a total of 20 appearances over the course of the season, became autumn champion, winter king and ultimately Austrian cup winner . For the 2011/12 season , Hesl initially returned to HSV.

On August 14, 2011, he signed a two-year contract with the second division Dynamo Dresden , where he was originally supposed to represent the long-term injured Benjamin Kirsten as number two behind Dennis Eilhoff . In the course of the first half of the season, however, Hesl was able to permanently prevail against Eilhoff, especially since he was out for several weeks due to a severe capsule injury in the left middle finger. After 13 missions, Hesl suffered a similar fate when he broke the little finger of his left hand against SC Paderborn 07 on matchday 22 and had to pause for several weeks. Since the now recovered Kirsten showed strong performances in the following games, Hesl did not play a game for Dynamo Dresden after recovering from injury, whereupon he terminated his contract after the 33rd matchday at the end of the season.

In the summer break of 2012, Hesl moved to Bundesliga promoted SpVgg Greuther Fürth . He signed a two-year contract until June 30, 2014. Towards the middle of the Bundesliga season, Hesl replaced Max Grün as the Franconian goalkeeper. After the season, his contract was extended to 2015. At the beginning of the 2013/2014 season , coach Frank Kramer appointed Hesl as the new team captain ; he replaced Mergim Mavraj .

After three years at SpVgg Greuther Fürth, Hesl moved to Arminia Bielefeld on a free transfer for the 2015/16 season . With the Ostwestfalen he signed a contract valid until 2017 and remained the goalkeeper until summer 2017. He then moved to the Würzburger Kickers , who had just been relegated to the third division , on a free transfer .

In June 2018, Hesl signed with the second division relegated 1. FC Kaiserslautern for two years . He ousted regular goalkeeper Sievers , but had to give way in the second half of the season for Lennart Grill , who had moved up from the second team . Just one year later, the club and the players agreed to terminate the contract early.

Engagement as an amateur

Shortly afterwards, Hesl announced the end of his professional career and stated that he wanted to play as a field player for the regional league club TSV Stulln, which is based in his Upper Palatinate homeland. With TSV, Hesl started the season as a left midfielder and scored his first goal on matchday 1.
