Stefan Wächter (born April 20, 1978 in Herne ), nicknamed "Toto", is a former German soccer goalkeeper and current goalkeeper coach .

Career

Wächter played at KFC Uerdingen 05 , VfL Bochum and Westfalia Herne and was under contract with Bundesliga club Hamburger SV from 2001 . He played with HSV in the UEFA Cup and the Champions League .

In the 2003/04 season , Wächter had to replace the goalkeeper Martin Pieckenhagen, who was injured by the cruciate ligament , and played his first game for Hamburg. After Pieckenhagen's recovery, Wächter was initially again a substitute goalkeeper. Due to Pieckenhagen's persistent form weakness, Wächter eventually pushed him out of the Hamburg goal and developed into the regular goalkeeper of his club. In the course of the 2005/06 season, Wächter was ousted by Sascha Kirschstein due to an injury . Although Wächter succeeded in playing his way back into the HSV regular formation at the end of 2006, when Frank Rost was signed in January 2007, Wächter was only scheduled as the third goalkeeper. HSV therefore did not extend his contract, which expired after the 2006/07 season.

At the beginning of the 2007/08 season Wächter moved to Bundesliga promoted Hansa Rostock , where he received a three-year contract. In the meantime, Jörg Hahnel was represented for two games , but Wächter developed into a regular goalkeeper in Rostock, until he tore a cruciate ligament in his right knee on April 27, 2008 in the match against Energie Cottbus after a total of 28 Bundesliga appearances . At the end of the season, Rostock was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga , in which Wächter was initially only scheduled as a substitute goalkeeper after his recovery. In 2009 he finally suffered a patellar tendon injury in his left knee and a few weeks later an inner meniscus tear in his right knee, which is why he did not come to any further use for Rostock's licensed team for the entire 2008/09 season. In the summer of 2009, Wächter was advised to change clubs despite the fact that the contract was still in existence. Nevertheless, guard stayed with FC Hansa and was listed in the squad of the second team in the Regionalliga Nord in the 2009/10 season, but was actually released.

Wächter ended his active career in 2010 due to his cruciate ligament injuries and has been working as a goalkeeping coach ever since.

In August 2014 it was announced that Wächter will be the lead goalkeeping coach in the U15 to U23 age groups at HSV. In addition, Wächter became the goalkeeping coach of the professionals on September 16, 2014, succeeding Ronny Teuber . Since the 2015/16 season , Wächter has been the only goalkeeping coach for the professionals. Marco Kostmann took over his junior coach position . On March 12, 2018, Wächter was released together with head coach Bernd Hollerbach .
