Regionalliga 2004/05
2. Bundesliga 2005/06

The 2005/06 season of the Regionalliga was the twelfth season of the Regionalliga as the third highest division in German football. It was played in two regional seasons - North and South. 19 teams played in the North season, the South season had a team strength of 18.

The champions and runners-up in the North and South seasons went straight to the 2nd Bundesliga .

North

The Northern Relay played with 19 teams in the 2005/06 season. Rot-Weiss Essen achieved promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga by winning the championship . FC Carl Zeiss Jena secured the runner-up and promotion . Jena was only the second team in the Regionalliga Nord to make the direct march from the Oberliga to the 2nd Bundesliga. Before that, only FC Gütersloh had succeeded in the 1995/96 season .

Prussia Münster , SG Wattenscheid 09 , Rot-Weiß Oberhausen , the second team of 1. FC Cologne and Chemnitzer FC were relegated to the top league in a sporting way.

Season overview

Despite five second representations from Bundesliga clubs, the regional league promised thrilling duels between many traditional clubs before the season. The favorites before the season were the relegated second division from Essen, FC St. Pauli , Holstein Kiel and the teams from VfB Lübeck and VfL Osnabrück , who had only just missed promotion the previous season. The two other second division relegated from Oberhausen and Erfurt were not expected to do much due to financial difficulties and a complete reorganization of the team.

At the beginning of the season, the two Holstein teams from Lübeck and Kiel were able to convince. They sat at the top of the table after the seventh match day and practically held their lead until the end of the first half of the season. At this point in time, a pentathlon for promotions between them and Essen, Jena and St. Pauli had developed, which should last until the end of the season. At the winter break, Kiel and Essen were ultimately ahead.

In the second half of the season Rot-Weiss Essen quickly set itself apart from the other teams, while St. Pauli had to tear something down. In the end, VfB Lübeck failed in the promotion race mainly due to its weakness away from home, while Holstein Kiel finally had to give up after a zero number at home against Erfurt and an away defeat at Kickers Emden . In addition to Essen, Carl Zeiss Jena was able to celebrate its return to the second class after eight years.

The relegation battle in the Regionalliga was also exciting until the end of the season. Shortly before the end of the season, ten teams were in acute danger of relegation, only Cologne and Chemnitz had lost touch with the saving places early on. Despite an intermediate high in the spring, Rot-Weiß Oberhausen was already the third relegated player a few game days before the end, Wattenscheid suffered a bitter 5-1 home defeat against the tied Erfurt team on the penultimate game day and was also relegated. Preußen Münster failed to save on the last match day, in contrast to previous years, the team had too few points in the second half of the season to stay in class.

The top scorer was Thomas Reichenberger from VfL Osnabrück with 17 goals.

East German football crisis

During the season it became known that the Regionalliga Nord will play consistently with 19 teams in the coming years. To strengthen East German football, the two winners of the NOFV upper leagues North and South have to play the playoffs for promotion to the regional league. Instead, both teams will be promoted directly to the regional league, so that five teams will be relegated and promoted. So far, seasons with 19 teams were the exception and only occurred when too many teams from the north were relegated from the 2nd Bundesliga.
