Regional football league 1973/74
The Regionalliga 1973/74 was the 11th and final season of the five-track Regionalliga as the second highest division in German football.
From the 1974/75 season the 2nd Bundesliga existed in Germany , for which the best 40 teams in the five regional leagues qualified. In order to determine the qualified teams, there was a point evaluation, in which points were credited for the places achieved in the individual final tables. The club placed first received 20 points, the second placed club 19, etc. The points determined in this way for the seasons 1969/70 and 1970/71 were rated single, 1971/72 and 1972/73 double and 1973/74 triple and added up to a total number of points. The 1973/74 champions in each of the five seasons qualified for the 2nd Bundesliga 1974/75 regardless of this five-year rating, unless they made it to the 1st Bundesliga in the 1974 Bundesliga promotion round. The remaining teams competed in the 1st amateur league from the 1974/75 season .
The FC Augsburg was the only team in the history of second-rate Regional as climbers from the first amateur league reached the promotion round to league.
On August 15, 1973, on the second match day of the Regionalliga Süd of TSV 1860 Munich against FC Augsburg, an all-time attendance record was set up at the Munich Olympic Stadium . After an early opening goal in the 1960s, fans waiting in front of the stadium attacked the stadium, injuring 136 people, especially when climbing over the fencing. Estimates of the final audience in attendance range from a general 80,000 to 90,000 viewers to 100,000 viewers. The game is considered to be the second division game with the highest number of spectators worldwide.
