The defensive talent was included in the professional squad of 1. FC Cologne when the Bundesliga was founded in the summer of 1963. Cologne won the first championship of the league, but Rumor was not used. He hadn't got past the defensive talents Leo Wilden , Anton Regh , Fritz Pott , Matthias Hemmersbach and Wolfgang Weber in his first senior year. In the semi-final second leg for the trade fair cup on April 29, 1964 at CF Valencia, he ran into the 0-2 defeat for the team of coach Georg Knöpfle . He also played in the DFB Cup on May 20, 1964 in the 2: 4 away defeat at Hertha BSC. Rumor made his debut on the fifth day of the second Bundesliga season, 1964/65, September 19, 1964, in a 4-2 home win against the eventual surprise champions SV Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga. Together with goalkeeper Toni Schumacher , defenders Fritz Pott and Toni Regh, he and Wolfgang Weber and Matthias Hemmersbach defended the defending champion. In the course of the round, a further eleven Bundesliga appearances were added. In the runner-up of 1. FC Cologne in 1964/65 Rumor played 12 games and he also came in the European Cup for FC in the games against Partizan Tirana (2: 0) and Panathinaikos Athens (1: 1, 2: 1 ) was used in November 1964. From 1964 to 1968 the defender made a total of 56 league games (1 goal). When 1. FC Köln won the DFB Cup in 1968, they played in the first round (FC Homburg, 4: 1) and in the semi-finals on May 3, 1968 against Borussia Dortmund (3: 0), where he played in the 80th minute coach Willy Multhaup came on for Heinz Flohe . During his time at 1. FC Köln, on November 16, 1966, he was appointed to the U23 junior national team by the DFB . For the 1968/69 season he was obliged by 1. FC Kaiserslautern, he moved from the cathedral city on the Rhine to the Palatinate. In addition to Rumor, Jürgen Friedrich from Eintracht Frankfurt also came to the Betzenberg for coach Egon Piechaczek's team . On the start of the round, August 17, 1968, the two newcomers made their debut in a 2-0 away defeat at Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga team of the "Red Devils". At the end of the round, the class could just be completed with 30:38 points. Surprisingly, the champions of 1968, 1. FC Nürnberg, were relegated to the Regionalliga Süd with 29:39 points. Rumor had helped in 33 games (1 goal) that the FCK could experience another year of Bundesliga football. Coach Piechaczek was replaced by Dietrich Weise on May 7, 1969 . The advancement in the DFB Cup up to the semi-finals could not change that. Rumor had played in all cup games against FC Freiburg (1-0), Eintracht Frankfurt (1-0), SV Werder Bremen (3-0) and the two games in the semi-finals against FC Schalke 04 for Lautern. In the replay on May 13, 1969, the FCK lost the semifinals with 1: 3 in Schalke. Also in the Intertoto round from June 28 to August 2, 1969 Rumor had represented the colors of FCK against Malmö FF, Olympique Marseille and Servette Geneva. He met the expectations in Kaiserslautern and made the leap to Bundesliga regular.

In his second year in Kaiserslautern, 1969/70, coach Gyula Lóránt returned and the three newcomers Klaus Ackermann , Fritz Fuchs and Dieter Krafczyk strengthened the squad, which was given an enormous boost by the Bundesliga debut of the young Seppl Pirrung after two years of suffering would have. Kaiserslautern finished 10th with 32:36 points and Rumor had scored two goals in 30 league appearances.

In 1970 Rumor moved to Berlin to third in the Bundesliga , to Hertha BSC and also reached 3rd place in the Bundesliga with Hertha in 1970/71. Unfortunately, he was one of the players involved in the 1971 Bundesliga scandal . For this he was punished with a lifelong ban and a fine of 15,000 DM. The ban came into effect on January 23, 1972, but was pardoned on November 26, 1973. A few months before the scandal, Rumor had taken on dry cleaning in Berlin as a second professional pillar, which he then expanded. After his suspension, he followed a request from the second division (Regionalliga) Tennis Borussia Berlin , with whom he was promoted to the Bundesliga. In the penultimate game of the promotion round against FC St. Pauli , which made the promotion perfect with a 2-0 victory, Rumor suffered a serious meniscus injury. After he came back to the end of the preliminary round due to the injury in the following season, he was in the second half of the season and captain and scored six goals. However, he was unable to prevent the club from relegating to the second Bundesliga, which has now been established. After the season he finally ended his professional career. In total, Rumor played 163 times in the Bundesliga and scored 10 goals.

Rumor later worked in a casino on Potsdamer Platz in Berlin.
