career

Youth and start in the senior sector, 1954 to 1965

In the youth department of Wandsbeker FC (since 1998 TSV Wandsetal ) the student Helmut Sandmann went through all age groups. The sporting development culminated in 1963 in the UEFA youth selection of the DFB. Five international matches were played, and the fast man on the right wing from Wandsbek was in action for Germany in all of the matches. The wing tongs were made by Sandmann and Günter Netzer from 1. FC Mönchengladbach. First, two qualifying matches against Austria in the spring of 1963 were on the program, then the UEFA tournament in England in April. Klaus Zaczyk from VfL Marburg, a teammate at HSV from 1969, held the connector role on half right. For the 1963/64 season the young player joined the amateur division of Hamburger SV. In the following two rounds with the HSV amateurs he was appointed to six games in the German national soccer team of amateurs in 1964 and 1965 . He made his debut on May 2, 1964 in Bamberg at the game against France. Together with Bernd Dörfel he formed the right wing. His last appearance in the team of the DFB amateurs was on June 2, 1965 in a 4-2 win against Holland in Winschoten. For the 1965/66 round he signed a license contract with HSV together with his teammates Rolf Schwartau and Dieter Strauss and thus moved up to the Bundesliga squad. He made his debut there on March 18, 1964, still as an amateur, in the European Cup game at Olympique Lyon .

On the tenth game day of the 1965/66 round, on October 23, 1965, the then HSV coach Georg Gawliczek brought him to use for the first time. He played on the right wing in the 5-0 defeat at 1. FC Nürnberg. The debut with his long-time defender partner Jürgen Kurbjuhn took place at the beginning of the second half of the season at the home game on January 9, 1966 against Borussia Neunkirchen. In his first season in the Bundesliga, he played 18 games for HSV. From the beginning of the second season he was part of the regular formation. In the DFB Cup , the team prevailed against Altona 93, 1. FC Cologne, Offenbacher Kickers and in the semifinals against Alemannia Aachen and thus advanced to the final on June 10, 1967 in Stuttgart against FC Bayern Munich . The Hamburg storm with Nafziger, Ohlhauser, Gerd Müller, Koulmann and Brenninger, however, were not up to the Hamburg team and clearly lost with 0: 4 goals. Due to the previous success of Munich on May 31, 1967 in Nuremberg against Glasgow Rangers in the final of the European Cup , HSV was qualified for the EC competition of the 1967/68 round despite the defeat. Via Randers Freja, Wisla Krakau and Olympique Lyon, the men around Helmut Sandmann played their way into the semifinals against Cardiff City in the 1968 European Cup. In the home game against the Welsh players on April 24th, the defender scored 1-1 in front of 64,000 spectators. Franz-Josef Hönig scored the winning goal for the 3-2 away win in the 91st minute of the second leg. The opponent in the final on May 23rd in Rotterdam was AC Milan, who eliminated defending champions Bayern Munich in the semi-finals. Coach Nereo Rocco led the "Rossoneri" to a deserved 2-0 final victory against Hamburger SV. For Sandmann, the round was not over yet, the DFB used him in the international match of the junior national team U 23 on June 3, 1968 in Kassel against England in defense. In the Bundesliga, the defender was last used on May 5, 1973 in the game against Werder Bremen as a substitute.

HSV Barmbek-Uhlenhorst, 1973 to 1975

For the 1973/74 round, Sandmann moved to BU in the Regionalliga Nord . The “blue and yellow” came in fifth at the end of the round and the newcomer from HSV had played 35 of 36 association games. The defense had only allowed 38 goals, but the offensive only scored 48 goals, so an even better placement could not be achieved, but the inclusion in the new 2nd Bundesliga North for the 1974/75 round was clear. Sandmann could not prevent the immediate relegation due to his performance in 36 games. This ended the high-class career of the former youth national player.

TSV Wandsbek-Jenfeld / Wandsbeker TSV Concordia, since 1996

From August 1996 to June 2018, Helmut Sandmann played in the super senior team of the Wandsbek TSV Concordia (initially TSV Wandsbek-Jenfeld) in Hamburg for pure fun in football and socializing . As head of the defense, he was able to bring his experience and skills to bear with the oldies (older than 60 years). Helmut Sandmann is also regularly active in the HSV old league (celebrity team).
