Buxtehuder SV, until 1960

Jürgen "Kubbi" Kurbjuhn grew up in the Buxtehude district of Altkloster after being expelled and joined the youth department of Buxtehuder SV . As an A-youth he was appointed to the DFB national youth team on May 15, 1958 at the international match against Denmark in Flensburg. In the 4-2 success of the German selection, he played alongside Friedel Rausch , Jürgen Sundermann and Willibert Kremer . At the age of 19, the amateur footballer of Buxtehuder SV made his debut in the German national football team of amateurs at the international match on May 27, 1959 in Siegen against England. This year he also won the national cup of amateurs with the Hamburg association selection with 4-1 goals . By 1960, five more appointments as DFB amateurs followed. He also played in the Olympic qualifying second leg against Poland on April 18, 1960 in Warsaw. In this game, however, the German defense was unable to decisively prevent the hosts from attacking and Poland won 3-1 goals and was thus qualified for the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome. For the round 1960/61 he moved to the new German soccer champion Hamburger SV in the soccer Oberliga Nord .

Hamburger SV, until 1972

Coach Günter Mahlmann brought the newcomer from Buxtehude immediately on the 1st match day of the 1960/61 round, on August 14, 1960, in the 3-1 success at Bremerhaven 93 as a left defender. By the end of the Oberliga era, 1962/63, the defensive line with strong combat and physical fitness had made 78 league missions and scored one goal. In the finals for the German football championship 1961 to 1963 Kurbjuhn played thirteen games with HSV. The highlights of the league phase were the matches in the European Champion Clubs' Cup in 1960/61 . Hamburg reached the semi-finals against FC Barcelona via Young Boys Bern and English champions FC Burnley . The 20-year-old defender "Kubbi" Kurbjuhn experienced the fascination of the Camp Nou in front of 90,000 spectators on April 12 , when the Brazilian striker Evaristo in the 46th minute of 1 : 0 winning goal for the Catalans succeeded. Also in the second leg and in the play-off on May 3, 1961 in Brussels - again Evaristo decided the game with one goal - Kurbjuhn belonged to the HSV-Elf.

Kurbjuhn belongs to the group of active players who got the league up and running on the first day of the new Bundesliga , on August 24, 1963. He was in the team of HSV when the first point in this league for the Rothosen was captured with a 1-1 draw in the Preußenstadion against Münster . Ten days earlier, on 14 August 1963, he won with a 3: 0 victory against Borussia Dortmund with his teammates - three goals from center forward Uwe Seeler - the German Cup 1963 . By the 1971/72 round, Jürgen Kurbjuhn had made 242 Bundesliga appearances and scored ten goals. His greatest success was reaching the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1968. HSV lost the final against AC Milan 2-0. But it was also a bitter hour for the reliable left defender of HSV: Both goals were scored by 33-year-old Kurt Hamrin for the Lombards . After the defeat in the 1967 Cup final against FC Bayern Munich , HSV was only allowed to compete in the European Cup championship competition because Bayern had won this competition in 1967 and were therefore already qualified as defending champions for the new season. The last Bundesliga game played Kurbjuhn on October 30, 1971 in the 1: 4 home defeat under coach Klaus-Dieter Ochs against FC Bayern Munich. Injury consequences did not allow a continuation of his career afterwards.

National team, 1961 to 1966

On September 20, 1961, the HSV talent made his debut in the DFB's U-23 junior selection at the international match in Odense against Denmark on the side of Josef Piontek . His second appearance against Poland followed on October 8th in the junior selection. At the end of his second season in the Oberliga Nord, 1961/62, he was appointed to the German national football team by national coach Sepp Herberger . On April 11, 1962, Kurbjuhn made his debut in the Volksparkstadion at home in the last international test match before the 1962 World Cup in Chile against Uruguay in the national team. In the 3-0 success he formed the German defender pair with Karl-Heinz Schnellinger . He was part of the squad for the 1962 World Cup in Chile, but was not used. Overall, the left defender from Hamburger SV made five international matches between 1962 and 1966. His last international match was Kurbjuhn's 4-0 win on May 4, 1966 in Dublin against Ireland.

After football

After his sporting career, the trained banker worked as an insurance and real estate broker and ran an agency in Buxtehude. In the 1970s Kurbjuhn was also a member of the city council of his hometown. He was elected as a non-party member of the CDU's list, but resigned his mandate after just two years. He died after a long illness at the age of 73.
