career

Amateur and Kiel, until 1967

Hönig, nicknamed "Bubi", started his career at FV 08 Geisenheim in Hesse . With the team from the Rheingau he won the championship in the 2nd amateur league in 1962/63 and 1963/64. But in each case the black and white failed from the sports field at the high school in the promotion rounds to the Hessen League . After several appointments to the Hessian amateur team, in 1963 he played in the national cup alongside Jürgen Grabowski and Bernd Rupp , the attacker from Geisenheim made his debut on May 15, 1963 in Durham in the international match against the Netherlands in the national soccer team of the amateur. In the 1-0 success of the DFB amateurs, he was used by the then responsible DFB coach Helmut Schön as a half right in the World Cup system . On September 15 and 22, 1963, he also represented the DFB colors at the German-German Olympic qualifying game against the representation of the GDR . In Karl-Marx-Stadt the Schön team lost 3-0, the 2-1 success in the second leg in Hanover could no longer prevent the elimination. His club mate Wilfried Leydecker stormed on the left wing. In 1963 and 1964 he played eleven times in the German national soccer team of amateurs and scored three goals. Hönig played his last game in the amateur national team on June 2, 1964 at a tournament in Italy in the final against Spain (1-1). For the 1964/65 season he signed a contract with Holstein Kiel and moved to the second-rate Regionalliga Nord as a contract player.

With the blue-white-reds from the Holstein Stadium , he made a dream start after eleven match days with 22: 0 points. At the end of the round, the championship was celebrated ten points ahead of runner-up FC St. Pauli. Hönig had scored 14 goals in 22 league appearances. In the Bundesliga promotion round, the north champion started with a 1: 1 home draw against the south German runner-up SSV Reutlingen. The two following defeats against Borussia Mönchengladbach (0: 1) - Egon Milder scored the winning goal in front of 35,000 spectators in the 90th minute on the Bökelberg - and Wormatia Worms (3: 4) prevented the hoped-for rise from the BL early on. Hönig and his teammates such as Gerd Koll , Gerd Saborowski and Manfred Podlich did not give up and won 3-0 in Worms and even celebrated a 4-2 success on June 19th in their home game against the Weisweiler-Elf from Niederrhein. Holstein Kiel ended the promotion round with a 1: 1 in Reutlingen and finished third in the group with 6: 6 points. Mönchengladbach rose to the Bundesliga with 8: 4 points. In the year of the football World Cup in England in 1966, the race in the Regionalliga Nord was a close three-way battle between St. Pauli (44:20), SC Göttingen (43:21) and Kiel (43:21). Due to the poor goal difference, Hönig and colleagues took third place. Hönig had scored eleven goals in 25 league appearances. In the third year, 1966/67 , Kiel gambled away on the last match day, May 15, 1967, by an unexpected 0-2 away defeat at the newcomer Sperber Hamburg again the entry into the BL promotion round. Arminia Hannover was champion with 47:17 points, Göttingen again tied on points (45:19 each) with Kiel runner-up. Coach Rudi Faßnacht with Friedemann Paulick , Jürgen Wohlgemuth , Uwe Witt , Rainer Skrotzki , Gerd Koll (22 goals), Winfried Schülke , Hans-Joachim Weller , Josef Pistauer , Jürgen Harm and the 20-time goal scorer (32 games) Hönig were recognized up to outstanding RL actors were available. The man from Rheinhessen , "Bubi" Hönig, signed a contract with Hamburger SV for the 1967/68 season after a total of 79 regional league games with 45 goals and moved to the Bundesliga.

The former series champion of the Oberliga Nord landed on the disappointing 14th place in 1966/67, and that with the two top performers of the national team Uwe Seeler and Willi Schulz . For the new season, senior Georg Knöpfle, a “soccer boss” and Kurt Koch, a new coach, was installed. In addition to Hönig, Werner Krämer (MSV Duisburg), Arkoc Özcan (Austria Wien) and Heinz Libuda (VAV Groningen) were signed on, with the change of Krämer being seen as a big caliber in the early years of the Bundesliga. On the third match day, September 2, 1967, Hönig made his debut in the away game against 1. FC Nürnberg in the Bundesliga. In front of 47,000 spectators, the Merkel troupe impressively demonstrated what was to be expected from Nuremberg in this round. The hosts won 4-0 after goals from Franz Brungs (2), August Starek and Zvezdan Čebinac . HSV finished the first half of the season on December 9, 1967 with 13:21 points and placed in 15th place; Hönig's start in the Bundesliga did not go smoothly. The second half of the season was much more positive with 20:14 points, but Hönig and colleagues did not reach 13th place. The newcomer from Kiel had scored eight goals in 20 Bundesliga games. Nevertheless, he experienced something special in his first year in Hamburg: HSV played in the European Cup Winners' Cup after successes against Randers Freja, Wisla Krakau, three games against Olympique Lyon and a 3-2 in the semifinals at Cardiff City, Hönig succeeded in Ninian Park in the 91st minute after going it alone, the winning goal until the final. That was played on May 23 in Rotterdam against AC Milan. The team of coach Nereo Rocco prevailed 2-0. In the attack, the HSV took on Bernd Dörfel , Krämer, Seeler, Hönig and Gert Dörfel .

In the next three seasons, 1968/69 to 1970/71, the "Rautträger" improved: HSV ranked twice on 6th and in 1971 on 5th place in the Bundesliga table. Hönig had played a total of 93 league games in the three years and scored 30 goals. Knöpfle had replaced Kurt Koch in 1969/70 and Klaus-Dieter Ochs made his coaching debut in 1970/71 . With Peter Nogly , Klaus Zaczyk and Hans-Jürgen Ripp , three long-standing top performers were added to the team. 1973 Hönig won the league cup with HSV . After the 1973/74 season he ended his seven-year activity with Hamburger SV under coach Kuno Klötzer . As a match organizer with excellent technique and goal rank in the central midfield, he was an essential part of the team structure for the "Rothosen".

In 205 games honey had scored 62 goals and was at times the captain of the team was. He was the team's most successful goalscorer in the 1970/71 and 1972/73 seasons . From 1965 to 1971 Hönig was used in several selection games of the North German Football Association against Jutland . He returned to his homeland in Hesse in the summer of 1974 and joined SV Wiesbaden .

Finale

1974 Hönig moved to the amateur league club SV Wiesbaden . He played his last competitive game in 1978. In 1978 he played as a guest player in a league game for Cork Celtic FC in the game against Shamrock Rovers , as he was not aware that guest players could be registered in the Irish league in league games. He then worked for adidas in the Rhine-Main area until his retirement .
