Rot-Weiß Lüdenscheid (abbreviated: RWL ) is the largest football club in Lüdenscheid in the Märkisches Kreis . The stadium has been the Nattenberg stadium in the southwest of the city since 1972 . From 1977 to 1981 the Lüdenscheider played in the 2nd Bundesliga North . Since the promotion in 2020, Rot-Weiß has been competing in the seventh-class Landesliga Westfalen .

history

The origins of the club go back to the Lüdenscheider football club 08 , which was founded on October 17, 1908. Today's club was created on July 1, 1971 through the merger of Sportfreunde Lüdenscheid and RSV Höh .

Stammverein Sportfreunde Lüdenscheid

The Lüdenscheider football club 08 merged on December 12, 1918 with FC Preußen Lüdenscheid and the Lüdenscheid game club to form VfB Lüdenscheid . The game club in turn was created in 1910 through the merger of the clubs Viktoria Lüdenscheid and Hohenzollern Lüdenscheid . On July 31, 1919, VfB joined the Lüdenscheider gymnastics club from 1861 , before the football department became independent as Sportfreunde 08 on February 17, 1924. In terms of sport, the Sportfreunde made it into the state league in 1952 , the highest Westphalian amateur league at the time. Four years later they missed the qualification for the newly created Verbandsliga Westfalen and stayed in the state division until the merger.

Main club RSV Höh

Merger partner RSV Höh was founded on May 6, 1910 as FC Fortuna Höh . In 1919 this merged with the Ballspielverein Lüdenscheid to form RSV Höh-Lüdenscheid , before it joined the Höher SV in the same year . In the following year, 1920, the football department split off again as RSV Höh-Lüdenscheid . In terms of sport, the higher were more successful than the sports fans. In 1966, the RSV was promoted to the Association League Westphalia for the first time and became the number one sport in Lüdenscheid. After relegation in 1969, he was immediately promoted again, so that Rot-Weiß Lüdenscheid was able to compete in the highest amateur league in Westphalia in 1971.

Merger and two ascents (1971 to 1977)

Reinforced with the former Bundesliga player Jürgen Schütz , the Lüdenscheid team became champions of their association league season in 1973. The final of the Westphalia Championship in neutral Lünen was lost 1: 2 against VfB 03 Bielefeld . The team of coach Werner Nagerski was more successful in the promotion round to Regionalliga West . With a 4: 2 on the last matchday against Union Ohligs , the Lüdenscheiders managed to move up to the second division. In the following regional league season 1973/74 RWL finished tenth and beat Borussia Dortmund 2-1. However, the qualification for the newly created 2nd Bundesliga was missed because the Lüdenscheid team had not scored enough points in the five-year ranking.

As early as 1976 , promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga was within reach. On the last day of the match RWL missed the relay championship after a 3-2 home defeat against SV Holzwickede, for which a draw would have been enough. Due to the defeat, a playoff for the relay championship had become necessary, which SV Holzwickede also won 3-2 in the Ischelandstadion in Hagen. The Lüdenscheiders could only celebrate a year later . Under coach Klaus Hilpert , the team first won the season and then prevailed clearly against SVA Gütersloh (6: 2, 0: 2) in the final of the Westphalia Championship . In the promotion round to the 2nd Bundesliga , the Lüdenscheider were able to make the promotion clear ahead of time, whereupon the " sidewalks were painted red and white" in the city according to the kicker sports magazine .

2nd Bundesliga (1977 to 1981)

The promotion season 1977/78 was successful after a bumpy start. Toni Burghardt took over from Klaus Hilpert as coach during the winter break and led RWL to 13th place. With 5,708 spectators, the Lüdenscheid team had the highest average number of visitors in the club's history. But already in the following season 1978/79 the euphoria collapsed. The Lüdenscheider were penultimate and with 106 goals conceded the worst defense. Low points of the season were a 1: 8 at Bayer 04 Leverkusen and a 2: 9 at SC Viktoria Köln . While RWL was already preparing for the new season in the Oberliga Westfalen , there was an unexpected comeback for the club .

Competitor Westfalia Herne had to surrender his license after the first match day of the 1979/80 season after its main sponsor Goldin had declared bankruptcy . The DFB then let Rot-Weiß Lüdenscheid move up to the 2nd Bundesliga. Despite the delayed start to the second division season, the team was able to keep the class in tenth place in the table. After the merger of the Bundesliga North and South and the associated reduction from 40 to 20 clubs, RWL rose to the Oberliga Westfalen in the 1980/81 season . With a 2: 2 at SG Wattenscheid 09 the Lüdenscheid said goodbye to professional football.

Senior league years (1981 to 1994)

With a 2-0 final victory over 1. FC Paderborn , the Lüdenscheid team secured the Westphalia Cup, which was played for the first time in 1982 . A year later, the team defended the title with a 2-0 win after extra time over SC Herford . In the championship, RWL delivered an exciting race with Eintracht Hamm-Heessen in the 1982/83 season . Both clubs ended the season with the same number of points and goal difference . In the end, the Hammer became champions due to the higher number of goals scored. The Lüdenscheider took part in the German amateur championship , where they failed in the first round at 1. FC Bocholt .

In the following years, the Lüdenscheider team initially slipped into mediocrity and then fought against relegation. In 1988 the team rose as a knocked-off bottom of the table in the Association League. Two years later, the rise succeeded. In 1992 RWL occupied a relegation place due to the worse goal difference compared to SpVg Beckum , but benefited from the withdrawal of ASC Schöppingen from the league. A year later, RWL had to start again in the association league; The final of the Westphalia Cup against SpVgg Erkenschwick was also lost 3-1. In 1994 the team made it back to the league, which was only fourth class after the re-establishment of the regional league.

Decline (since 1994)

The return to the league was successful and RWL took fourth place in the 1994/95 season . But it was only a brief rebellion, because two years later the Lüdenscheider relegated to the association league again as the penultimate. The direct resurgence was missed as third in the table. After another third place in the 2000/01 and 2002/03 seasons, things went downhill for the club. In 2006 the Lüdenscheider relegated to the state league . Three years later, the club had to go into the eight-class district league. On the last day of the match, a 4: 3 win at TuS Stockum was not enough for relegation, as the direct competitors also won their games.

In 2016 Rot-Weiß was runner-up behind FSV Gerlingen , but failed in the first round of the promotion round with 0: 1 at FC Neuruhrort . Three years later, the Lüdenscheider team were runner-up again, this time behind SpVg Hagen . In the first round of the promotion round, the red-whites lost 1: 4 against SCV Neuenbeken . It was not until 2020 that they were promoted to the regional league again.

Rot-Weiß Lüdenscheid in the DFB Cup

The Lüdenscheid team took part in the DFB Cup ten times . The team reached the second round three times. In the 1974/75 season , the team first beat TSV Klein-Linden and then lost 3: 5 against Eintracht Braunschweig . In 1982/83 RWL first prevailed in the replay against Freiburg FC and then lost to SV Darmstadt 98 in round two . A year later, the Lüdenscheider first beat SSV Ulm in 1846 and then failed at SpVgg Fürth . Prominentester Cup opponent was in the 1978/79 season the 1. FC Köln , the 13,000 spectators in Lüdenscheid 4: won first RWL's last appearance in the DFB Cup so far was in the 1993/94 season , when the team lost 2-0 to FC Augsburg in the second round .
