The Lüdenscheider Turnverein is the oldest and with 1,800 members the second largest sports club in Lüdenscheid . The association was founded in 1861.

history

On April 13, 1861, the court secretary Hermann Bierhoff suggested the establishment of a gymnastics club in the city of Lüdenscheid. The founding meeting took place on April 29, 1861. Wilhelm Gerhardi (1861–1862) became the first chairman of the association. In the first few years the range of sports on offer was largely limited to gymnastics. The number of members increased, among other things, through the establishment of an age group (1876), its own youth department (1880) and a women's department (1896). In the middle of the 20th century, some ball sports were formed in the club, for example hockey (1930), tennis (1932) and football (1939). In recent history, “modern” sports such as inline skater hockey (1997), cheerleading (2000), martial arts (2003), jazz dance (2004) or disabled sports (2005) have finally been added. Since 1948, the Lüdenscheider Turnverein has been awarding the club's internal awards, the Louis Wurm silver needle for outstanding sporting achievements and the Louis Wurm gold needle for special commitment to the club. Louis Wurm was 1st Chairman between 1934 and 1939.
