Otto Knefler (born September 5, 1923 in Bernburg , † October 30, 1986 in Steinbach , Ottweiler ) was a German football coach and football player .

Career

As an active player, Knefler won the GDR championship with Turbine Halle in 1952 . The following year he moved to Werder Bremen with three other Halle players and coach Fred Schulz .

At SV Saar 05 Saarbrücken , he began his career as a professional coach in 1963. From 1967 to 1979 he coached the Bundesliga clubs 1. FC Kaiserslautern , Eintracht Braunschweig , Borussia Dortmund , MSV Duisburg and Eintracht Frankfurt . After his first engagement in the Bundesliga in 1967/68 at 1. FC Kaiserslautern (where he had the later coaches Uwe Klimaschefski and Otto Rehhagel in the squad), he played again at Fortuna Düsseldorf in the Regionalliga West from 1968 to 1970 before he in the 1971/72 season the difficult successor to the master coach of 1967, Helmuth Johannsen , took over at Eintracht Braunschweig. The first year brought the sensational fourth place, the second season the normality of 12th rank and in 1972/73 the relegation of the founding club of the Bundesliga in 1963/64. In return, Otto Knefler led Eintracht back to the Bundesliga in the 1973/74 season via the Regionalliga Nord and the promotion round in the summer of 1974.

Knefler's path then led to the west. Borussia Dortmund was his field of activity in the 2nd Bundesliga North from the 1974/75 season . With the team around Bertram , Huber and Varga, however, the promotion did not succeed. On January 26, 1976, he was dismissed by President Heinz Günther due to a player revolt, based on the players Zoltán Varga , Helmut Nerlinger and Peter Geyer . In the same year, MSV Duisburg brought him to Wedau and thus to the Bundesliga. With playmaker Kurt Jara and the two dangerous strikers Rudi Seliger and Ronald Worm , the good defense around Bernard Dietz and Detlef Pirsig guaranteed a good 9th place in the midfield of the table in the 1976/77 season . His work at Eintracht Frankfurt from the 1978/79 season was terminated prematurely by a contract termination on December 31, 1978 due to illness.
