Trainer
ZSG Union / Turbine Halle, 1949 to 1953
From the 1949/50 round, Fred Schulz exercised the position of head coach at ZSG Union Halle (later Turbine Halle) in the GDR league . In the third season of 1951/52 he led the players Otto Werkmeister (captain), Otto Knefler , Herbert Rappsilber , Karl Gola and Erich Haase to win the championship title in the GDR. In the local Kurt Wabbel Stadium , the championship round was recorded with 22,170 visitors, a considerable average of spectators. The handwriting of the trainer was characterized by the attributes "technically sophisticated style of play" and "master for the eye". In the 1952/53 season, Fred Schulz was released on April 10, 1953 and then moved to the Federal Republic. As the successor to Helmut Schön , he oversaw the GDR selection in Zwickau in the 3-1 win against Saxony on April 23, 1950. Schulz was a member of the GDR's coaching council, which was formed in October 1952 and was chaired by Willi Oelgard as chairman and national coach. Since the coaching advice did not harmonize, Fred Schulz resigned on his own initiative.
Werder Bremen , 1953 to 1958 and 1978
Fred Schulz trained in the Oberliga Nord from 1953/54 to 1957/58 Werder Bremen. The former Halle players Ebert II, Haase, Heyse and Knefler had also found their way to Bremen. From the 1954/55 round, Willi Schröder was part of Fred Schulz's team. Georg Knöpfle replaced the man from Halle as coach of the Oberliga-Elf for the round in 1958/59. Now Fred Schulz took over the Werder amateurs. On December 30, 1961, he achieved a sensation in the North German Cup with a 3-0 win against Hamburger SV . He then moved to the post of league chairman at SV Werder for years. When in the 1977/78 Bundesliga coach Hans Tilkowski was dismissed on December 19, 1977, the manager Rudi Assauer needed a licensed coach at his side. Fred Schulz, who had acquired the soccer teacher license in 1957, took over the coaching position at Werder Bremen for half a year on January 2nd, 1978. With an age of 74 years and 184 days on the last day of the 1977/78 season (April 29, 1978), Schulz is still the oldest coach who has ever looked after a Bundesliga team.
statement
Herbert Rappsilber said in an interview in LIBERO No. D 4 in 1992 about his former trainer Fred Schulz: "He was a super technician as a player and so was he as a trainer. He asked us to prefer more technique and at that time moved away from the so-called 'fitness brawl.' Although we preferred more technical things in training, this did not mean that we ran less. As a selection trainer, he was on the same wave as Helmut Schön. Alfred Schulz was not a tough man, like Helmut Schön, he tried to do it in a human way. He was also contrary to those responsible for the football section of the GDR, who wanted it the other way round. This was also the reason why Fred Schulz threw in the towel at an early stage Has."
Personal
Son Hans Schulz became German champion in 1965 with SV Werder Bremen. In LIBERO No. D 15 from 1998 by the IFFHS, Fred Schulz is registered in 7th place in the election of the “East German trainer of the decade” (1945–1960).
