East Zone Championship and GDR Oberliga, 1948 to 1955

During his three years imprisonment in Great Britain, the former right-winger profited from the regular football game that was played in the English camps. When the Halle team contested the 1st East Zone final with Freiimfelde Halle in 1948, he had just returned from the island and started playing for SG Giebichenstein. But just a few months later he switched to the SG Freiimfelde Halle and won the championship of Saxony-Anhalt straight away on April 10, 1949 in Magdeburg with a 2-0 win against Blau-Weiß Stendal. Already on August 21, 1948 he was the right runner in the state selection of Saxony-Anhalt in the game against Thuringia. In the final round of the Eastern Zone Championship , Otto Werkmeister was on half right in action. After successes against SG Dresden-Friedrichstadt and Eintracht Stendal , Halle prevailed against Fortuna Erfurt with a 4-1 win in the final on June 26, 1949 in Dresden . Werkmeister scored the 3-0 for the team from Halle, which was renamed ZSG Union in April. In the first year of the zone league (DS League) in 1949/50 Otto Werkmeister completed 26 games for ZSG Union Halle which came in 5th place in the table. On July 2, 1950, he was the defensive chief (center runner ) of Saxony-Anhalt in the 6-2 win against Mecklenburg in action. In the 1950/51 round he was in all 34 league games in use. Halle landed on 6th place in the table. "Ottchen" was the undisputed head of the defense and was also involved in the unofficial selection games between the GDR and Poland in April 1951. In May, June and August 1951 he completed three more assignments in the state selection of Saxony-Anhalt. On August 1st, the final of the GDR regional cup was lost with 1: 2 goals against Saxony. At the age of 34, Otto Werkmeister celebrated his second win in the GDR championship in the 1951/52 round. As a defender and stopper, the captain was a guarantor of the defensive strength of the master from Halle. With the impressive home record of an average of 22,170 spectators, the performance of the team from coach Fred Schulz was duly recognized. During this time, Ottmar Werkmeister was referred to as the trainer's right hand. As the defending champion in 1952/53, it was only 13th; as a result, trainer Fred Schulz was dismissed in April 1953 and moved to the Federal Republic. In the year of the soccer world championship 1954 in Switzerland, Halle improved to eighth place despite the departures Ebert I, Haase , Heyse and Knefler . The 36-year-old Otto Werkmeister defended the Halle team in 27 missions. In the round 1954/55, the veteran was 37 years old in May 1955, the club, renamed SC Chemie Halle-Leuna in September 1954, rose as 13th from the GDR league. In January 1955 an unbelievable dry spell began, victories no longer wanted to succeed and Herbert Rappsilber switched to the Oberliga Süd for FSV Frankfurt am Main during the second half of the season . After the relegation of the flagship of the Anhalt football metropolis, Otto Werkmeister ended his playing career with 163 top division appearances. He had played his last league game on April 24, 1955 in Halle in a 2-1 win against ZSK Vorwärts KVP Berlin.

Trainer, 1957-1973

Otto Werkmeister's career as a coach began in 1957 at Chemie Bitterfeld . There he was able to gain his first coaching experience during two rounds. Chemie Bitterfeld played in season 3 of the 2nd GDR league against Dessau, Geiseltal, Burg, Leuna, Böhlen, Schkeuditz, Motor Gohlis, Thale, Halberstadt and Greppin. In 1959 he took over his home club SC Chemie Halle in the 1st GDR League, which had been relegated from the GDR Oberliga the year before. Right away he led Halle to the championship and thus to promotion (41:11 and 35:17) with a six point lead over runner-up SC Aufbau Magdeburg. With 12,646 spectators, the newcomer also had the best attendance average. The people of Halle performed well throughout the season. With the victories against Steinach (4: 1) and in Glauchau (5: 0), coach Otto Werkmeister's protégés led the table from the first day of the match and never gave up this top position. The coach, one of the most popular former Halle players, who had made it to the 2nd GDR league with the Bitterfelders in 1957, took over the chemistry team in January and his goal could only be to get up again. The basis for this was laid in the excellent first half series with eleven wins and two draws. With an improved physical condition, the young team succeeded in doing this very safely, as they competed with wit but could also rely on their top division routine. After the resurgence in 1960, however, a fight for relegation in the league followed. Otto Werkmeister's team was barely able to keep the class ahead of the relegators from Weißenfels and Zeitz. In the cup, however, they moved into the semi-finals after successes against Burg, ASK Vorwärts Leipzig and SG Dynamo Erfurt. On September 4, 1960 Halle lost at SC Empor Rostock with 0-1 goals. In the 1961/62 round almost identical performance. Again the 11th place in the league, but now succeeded on June 10, 1962 in Karl-Marx-Stadt with 3-1 goals to win the cup against SC Dynamo Berlin . With this, trainer Otto Werkmeister took part in the 1962/63 round with Halle in the cup winners in the European Cup . In the first round they failed after two defeats at OFK Belgrade . In the major league they made it to sixth place and moved into the semi-finals in the cup. In 1964, however, the coach could not prevent relegation from the league. In return he led his club back in 1965 as a climber in the highest GDR league. With rank 11 in 1966 he ended his coaching activity in Halle. The coaching stations at Chemie Leuna and Dynamo Eisleben followed . In 1973 he ended his career as a football coach in Lutherstadt Eisleben .
