VfB Theley eV is a football club from the Schaumbergdorf Theley in the Saarland municipality of Tholey . The club plays its games in the 9,000-seat Schaumberg Stadium .

history

The association was founded on December 7, 1919 in an inn in Theley . After starting the game in 1921 and several years in Saarland leagues, the club was able to make promotion to the Saarland amateur league in the 1954/55 season , only to become champions of this class two years later in 1957/58 . In the promotion games that followed, VfB prevailed against the representatives of the Rhineland and Palatinate regional associations and thus became champions of the Southwest regional association. The club rose to the II. Southwest Division and held this class until the same thing was dissolved and the Bundesliga was founded in 1963.

The successful 1970s

VfB Theley experienced another extremely successful sporting period at the beginning of the seventies, when they sold surprisingly well in the Regionalliga Südwest , the second highest division in Germany at the time . Although they rose in the first regional league season 1970/71 as bottom of the table again; after the immediate resurgence in 1972 , however, VfB occupied a respectable 10th and 13th place in the table in the 1972/73 and 1973/74 regional league seasons . In the 1975/76 season they won the Saarland Cup, which entitled the club to participate in the first main round of the DFB Cup in the following year . VfB Theley surprisingly won the 1st main round in 1976/77 against BFC Preussen Berlin and was eliminated in the 2nd main round against MSV Duisburg .

1980s until today

After the introduction of the uniform 2nd Bundesliga in 1974, for which the club could not qualify, the club changed several times between amateur or association and state leagues before they could establish themselves in the Saarland's top division since 1988. In 1999 they secured the championship title and rose to the Oberliga Südwest . Since 2000, the northern Saarlanders played again in the Association League Saar until they were relegated to the Landesliga Nord / Ost in 2007. After the reorganization of Saarland football for the 2009/10 season, VfB played in the now only seventh-class Saar Association. There he won the championship and rose to the highest Saarland league, the Germany-wide sixth class Saarlandliga . In the 2010/11 season, the Theleyer relegated to the Saar Association League and after a temporary relegation to the State League, the club has been back in the Saar Association League (Northeast relay) since 2016.
