The Saarland League, whose official name was "Karlsberg League Saarland" from the 2012/13 season to the 2017/2018 season, has been the name of the top division of the Saarland Football Association since the 2009/10 season . In the league hierarchy of German football, the league represents the sixth highest division. Until it was renamed "Karlsberg-Liga Saarland", the league was called " Verbandsliga Saar". Under this name, a second-highest Saarland-wide division, subordinate to the Saarland League, was introduced from the 2009/10 season.

history

Honor League Saarland

The league was founded in 1947 under the name Ehrenliga Saarland below the Oberliga Südwest . The ten founding members were:

SV Homburg - Sportfreunde Burbach - FC Ensdorf - SC Brebach - SV Preußen Merchweiler - FV 08 Püttlingen - SV Ludweiler - ASC Dudweiler - SV Blieskastel - Viktoria Hühnerfeld

From 1948 to 1951 the Saarland was not part of the German league system, so that the honor league was the highest division for the Saarland teams. Only 1. FC Saarbrücken played out of competition in the 2nd French division .

Amateur league Saarland

In 1951 Saarland returned to the German league system and 1. FC Saarbrücken and Borussia Neunkirchen were incorporated into the Oberliga Südwest. The Saarland Amateur League , as it was now called, became the third division, below the 2nd Southwest League.

With the introduction of the Bundesliga in 1963, the 2nd Southwest League disappeared, so that the Saarland Amateur League continued to be the third division, now below the Southwest Regional League . It retained this status even after the introduction of the 2nd Bundesliga in 1974.

Association League Saar

In 1978 the Saarland Amateur League was renamed the Saar Association League . At the same time it became the fourth division, as the new Oberliga Südwest was introduced below the 2nd Bundesliga .

With the introduction of the new regional leagues in 1994, the league was now the fifth highest division.

Saarland League

When the 3rd league was founded in 2008 , the association league slipped one step lower, so that - since the 2009/10 season under the name Saarlandliga - it is now only the sixth highest class in the German football league system.

1947 to 1978 (honor league / amateur league)

The respective champions had to contest promotion rounds after the season in order to advance to the next higher division. Teams marked with a achieved promotion.  

1979 to 2009 (Association League Saar)

Since 1979 the Saarland champion has been automatically promoted to the next higher division. The VfB Dillingen (1994), Rot-Weiss Hasborn (1999), the 1. FC Saarbrücken II (2002) and the SV Mettlach (2008) also rose as a runner-up.
