The Sportfreunde 05 Saarbrücken are a football club from the Saarbrücken district of Burbach , which played first or second class until 1965.

family tree

The Sportfreunde emerged from TV 1876 Burbach , founded in 1876 . In January 1905 a football department was created on TV, which became independent as Sportfreunde 05 on January 26, 1924 in the course of the “clean divorce” . On March 29 of the same year, the ball game club Burbach joined, which was created in 1913 through the merger of FC Viktoria 07 Burbach with FC Bavaria Burbach (until 1912 the football department of the Burbacher Hütten-Verein ).

As in many other cities, there was a major merger of all sports clubs in Burbach in 1938, resulting in the Saarbrücken sports community (also TSG Burbach ). After the Second World War, all German clubs were dissolved, and in 1945 the Sportfreunde re-established as TuS Burbach . From 1946 the association was called Sportfreunde Burbach , from 1947 finally Sportfreunde 05 Saarbrücken .

Sporting development

The first game of the Sportfreunde was played in June 1905 on the Burbacher Markt against TV Malstatt , which won 5-0. According to the club's history, due to too many window panes being shot in, the sports fans soon moved via two intermediate stops to the Saarwiesen , where home games have been taking place since 1908.

In 1909 the Sportfreunde were accepted into the South German Football Association. In the first year, the young club moved into the playoff for the class championship. Against Moselland Trier (the oldest predecessor of today's Eintracht ) there was another 0: 5. In 1911, the Saarbrücken-based company won the title and thus promotion to the B-Class. There followed two second places before the World War initially ended the game.

After the war, the Saarbrückers belonged to the district league, from which they were relegated in 1923 and rose again in 1927. Sportfreunde played in this first-class league until 1932/33 , after which they were among the founding members of the newly created Gauliga Südwest . In 1935 the people from Saarbrücken rose, rose again in 1936, and fell again in 1937. In 1938, all clubs from Burbach were merged to form the sports community (SG) Saarbrücken (also called TSG Burbach ) under political pressure . In the following four years, the club reached the Gauliga promotion round three times, but failed each time.

After the end of the war, the club was re-established as TSG Burbach in 1945 , renamed Sportfreunde Burbach in 1946 and finally adopted the old name Sportfreunde Saarbrücken again around 1947 . The team played in the first post-war years in the improvised Saarland league, in which they were champions in 1950 as well as in their first year in the Saarland amateur league in 1952. The sports fans renounced the associated promotion to the league . Instead, they were taken over into the new 2nd League Southwest . In their place, the runner-up SV Saar 05 Saarbrücken rose.

In the following years, the Sportfreunde were an elevator team. 1954 succeeded the first promotion to the league, but where they could only hold in the 1958/59 season. Until then, the people of Saarbrücken either rose or fell every year. In 1963, Sportfreunde did not qualify for the new Bundesliga , but were assigned to the Regionalliga Südwest . In the first regional league season 1963/64, the later national player Johannes Löhr played for Saarbrücken and was the league's top scorer with 31 goals. The team occupied 8th place in the table this season. In the following year, Sportfreunde withdrew from the regional league voluntarily for financial reasons. After all, the players ended the season with no earnings. The Sportfreunde remained in the third-class amateur league Saarland until 1975, to which they only returned once for a short time in the 1987/88 season. Today (status: 2019/2020 season) they play in the Saarbrücken district league after various relegations in the meantime.

In 1956, the Sportfreunde provided two national players from Saarland . Right winger Günter Herrmann and goalkeeper Hans Neuerburg were used in the penultimate game of the Saarland national team (0-0 against Portugal's B selection).
