The VfR Neumünster (officially: Association for lawn sports Neumünster from 1910 eV ) is a sports club from Neumünster in Schleswig-Holstein . The club was founded on March 3, 1910 and has the club colors purple and white. The VfR venue is the Grümmi-Arena . The first soccer team has been playing in the sixth class Schleswig-Holstein state league since relegation in 2019 . In addition to football, the club also offers gymnastics , taekwondo , table tennis and the leisure game cornhole .

history

From the foundation to the Second World War

The club was founded on March 3, 1910 by members of FC Viktoria 1909 Neumünster and the street football club FC Germania 1907 Neumünster as FV Neumünster . This merged on February 14, 1924 with the VfR 1923 Neumünster to today's VfR Neumünster. The VfR 1923 was formed the year before as part of the clean divorce as a spin-off from the gymnastics club Gut-Heil Neumünster .

In its first season under its current name, the lawn athletes were promoted to the then first-class Schleswig-Holstein district league . There, the VfR played primarily in the Eider relay, while the then more successful city rival Olympia competed in the promotion relay . Only with the introduction of the single-track Oberliga Schleswig-Holstein came derbies between the two clubs. At the end of the 1930/31 season, the VfR was relegated to the district class, two years later he was not accepted into the newly created Gauliga Nordmark .

In the Schleswig-Holstein district league, the club was regularly one of the strongest clubs, but it was only able to reach the promotion round in 1938. Here the lawn athletes failed to lawn sport Harburg , which defeated VfR 9-0 in the promotion round. The lawn athletes did not take part in the Schleswig-Holstein Gauliga, introduced in 1942 , so that they remained in second class until the end of the Second World War .

1945 to 1963: post-war period

In the post-war period, VfR Neumünster was initially unable to build on its successes from the 1920s. In 1947 he was a founding member of the West Relay of the Schleswig-Holstein State League , but when he was eighth, he clearly missed qualifying for the single-track state league . The lawn athletes now competed in the district class east and failed in 1950 in the promotion round to the state league at TSV Brunsbüttelkoog and TSV Neustadt . In the second attempt a year later the league was unbeaten.

At the same time, the purple-whites took over local dominance and quickly established themselves in the top group of the state league. In 1953 they were national champions, but in the promotion round to the Oberliga Nord last behind Eintracht Braunschweig , Bergedorf 85 and VfL Wolfsburg . Two years later the VfR was more successful. With a victory in the play-off against Heider SV with equal points , the lawn athletes moved into the promotion round again, which the team finished tied with VfV Hildesheim . Neumünster won the deciding game in Hamburg's Hoheluft stadium 2-0.

In the promotion season , the lawn athletes made headlines nationwide with surprise victories such as a 2-0 win over Hamburger SV . Only Hannover 96 was able to win in Neumünster, so that at the end of the season it was fifth. Two years later, the descent could only just be avoided. For the 1958/59 season , Heinz Lucas took over the coaching position. After a weak start to the season, the team improved in the second half of the season and finished third at the end of the season, ahead of Holstein Kiel . With 7,933 spectators, the highest average attendance in the club's history was achieved.

The fact that VfR could not build on this successful season was due to the fact that the club environment could not keep up with the sporting development. Initially, the lawn athletes slipped into midfield, but were able to achieve fourth place again in 1963 , which entitles them to participate in the Rappan Cup . Neumünster met Rapid Wien , PSV Eindhoven and Djurgårdens IF and finished third in the group. The club did not apply for the Bundesliga , which was introduced in 1963 .

1963 to 1995: failed attempts at promotion

In the regional league, the team was no longer able to match the good results of previous years. After a tenth place in the first season, she surprisingly finished a relegation place in 1964/65. VfV Hildesheim, against whom the lawn athletes made the league promotion in 1955, had the better goal quotient in the final table . Thus, Neumünster was third class for the first time in 15 years. In the first season after relegation, VfR immediately secured the state championship, but started the promotion round with a clear 1: 5 home defeat against SC Sperber Hamburg . The team initially slipped back to mid-table before the team had to fight relegation in the late 1960s.

In 1971 Herbert Sander took over the chairmanship of the association. He wanted to lead the club back up and accepted the club's debt. 1974 missed the team due to the poor goal difference against Flensburg 08 and the associated direct qualification for the newly created Oberliga Nord. VfR took second place in the relegation round, but was only last there. In 1975 and 1976 the lawn athletes failed in the promotion round to Eintracht Nordhorn and the SV Atlas Delmenhorst . Two years later, VfR had it in their own hands to make the promotion perfect. On the last day of the promotion round, the team did not get beyond a 2-2 win against Bremer SV , which ultimately rose.

1979 the Neumünsteraner failed in the promotion round due to the poor goal difference at Blumenthaler SV . With the promotion of OSC Bremerhaven to the 2nd Bundesliga , a playoff against the second in the other promotion round group was scheduled. In neutral Stade , SV Meppen beat Neumünster 4-1. The fifth promotion round participation in 1980 was unsuccessful because the Lüneburg SK was able to prevail. A year later, the club, which was in debt with 500,000 marks, was facing bankruptcy . President Sander had to leave while the city saved the club.

With a significantly younger team, VfR missed the promotion round in 1982 only because of the poorer goal difference against BSC Brunsbüttel . This was achieved a year later, but the so-called "eleven of the unpaid" failed at SV Lurup . In the following years, the lawn athletes were regularly placed in the upper half of the table, but several times only narrowly missed the promotion round. In the early 1990s, the team slipped back into mid-table and missed the newly created Oberliga Hamburg / Schleswig-Holstein in 1994 . A year later, as runner-up behind TSV Nord Harrislee, they were promoted to the league.

Since 1995: present

In the upper league, the lawn athletes did not get beyond the relegation battle. In 1999 the VfR was relegated third to last, but managed to get back up straight away. Now the team was able to establish itself in the league and was surprisingly runner-up in 2003 behind the amateurs of FC St. Pauli . Since this was not allowed to participate in the promotion games to the Regionalliga due to the relegation of their own professional team to the Regionalliga, the VfR moved up. In front of 4,432 spectators, Neumünster lost his home game against Kickers Emden with 1: 2. In the second leg, the lawn athletes came to a 3-2 victory, so that the VfR rose due to the away goals rule .

But the club was overwhelmed with the regional league. The club only got approval from the DFB with great difficulty because of the ailing stadium . In addition, the new manager Rainer Wasielke caused internal quarrels. The team proved to be not competitive and was only able to celebrate their first win of the season in March 2004. The regional league year plunged the club into another financial crisis, which in 2005 resulted in a bankruptcy petition. However, this could be withdrawn on November 16, 2006. At the end of the 2006/07 league season , the VfR's license was withdrawn after the club had to file for bankruptcy again.

This new bankruptcy petition could also be withdrawn on June 29, 2007, so that the team was allowed to compete in the Schleswig-Holstein Association League , which was renamed the Schleswig-Holstein League in 2008 . In terms of sport, the lawn athletes were successful and were runner-up three times in a row, behind the second Holstein Kiel team . In the 2010/11 season , the VfR was undefeated champions, but for financial reasons waived the promotion to the regional league. The VfR remained unbeaten until the 15th matchday of the 2011/12 season , before Flensburg 08 ended the VfR series with a 1-0 victory after 49 games without defeat. At the end of the season, the lawn athletes defended their championship title and were promoted directly to the Regionalliga Nord, where the team came sixth in the promotion season 2012/13 .

Two years later, he was relegated to the penultimate, before going down to the state league in 2019 .

Stadion

VfR Neumünster plays its home games in the Grümmi-Arena (formerly VfR-Stadion on Geerdtsstraße ). The stadium was built in 1927 and initially had a capacity for around 18,000 spectators. In the meantime, the capacity has been reduced to 6,000 spectators. It is currently being built on a grandstand with seating for 800, which should be covered in winter 2012/13. In addition, the guest block with 850 seats and the back straight will be equipped with rubber mats and breakwaters to meet the requirements of the regional league. In order not to fall under the Ordinance on Places of Assembly and the associated even higher structural requirements (including a continuous breakwater at the height of the first traverses), the association decided not to admit more than 4,999 people despite the 6,000 possible people. For this purpose, the north curve will primarily be closed to the public.
