Antoine "Tony" Hey (born September 19, 1970 in West Berlin ) is a former German soccer player and current coach .

Player career

Antoine Hey was born in West Berlin as the son of soccer player Jonny Hey and grew up mostly in North Rhine-Westphalia , where his father spent most of his career. Antoine Hey played in his youth at VfB 03 Hilden and Spvg. Hilden 05/06, before moving to Fortuna Düsseldorf in the Bundesliga for the 1989/90 season. In a total of three seasons, Hey played 49 games for Fortuna and scored five goals. After Düsseldorf was relegated at the end of the 1991/92 season, the midfielder switched to league rivals FC Schalke 04 .

Here Hey came to 19 missions in two seasons, in which he could not score, and switched to the then second division Tennis Borussia Berlin for the 1993/94 season . Hey scored seven goals in 27 matches for the capitals, but could not prevent the club from relegating and therefore moved to SC Fortuna Köln within the 2nd Bundesliga .

Hey played 94 games in three seasons with the Domstadt team and was able to score 16 goals before moving to Birmingham City in the summer of 1997 and staying there for two seasons. From England, Hey returned in 1999 to his home club Fortuna Düsseldorf in the Regionalliga West / Südwest and one year later moved to the then second division VfL Osnabrück for the 2000/01 season .

This season Hey played again 33 second division games, but could not score a goal. After a six-month activity (December 1, 2001 to June 30, 2002) as an assistant coach at Wuppertaler SV and two further seasons 2001/02 and 2002/03 for the Cypriot first division club Anorthosis Famagusta as well as a three-month short assignment between March and July 2003 with the English third division team Bristol City , Hey moved in 2003 to the then regional division VfR Neumünster . In addition to his midfield position, he also took on the position of coach. In May 2004 Antoine Hey was given leave of absence from the association's board due to ongoing disagreements about his contractual relationships with the VfR. At the end of the 2003/04 season, Antoine Hey ended his active career.

Coaching career

Hey's first position as a trainer was the post of chief trainer at Wuppertaler SV, which he held from December 1, 2001 to June 30, 2002. Hey, who was still active at the time, took over the leadership of the team on September 1, 2003 at VfR Neumünster in the Regionalliga Nord as player-coach.

Hey held this position until the end of his career on May 30, 2004, before taking over the leadership of the Lesotho national football team on September 1, 2004 .

Hey is the holder of the soccer teacher license (UEFA-Pro-License) and the English FA-Coaching Certificate. He is the UEFA coach instructor for English-speaking countries on the African continent.

After a 15-month employment in Lesotho , he was dismissed from the coaching office on January 1, 2006 and on September 1, 2006 he was the national coach of the Gambian national soccer team . In April 2007, Antoine Hey and GFA separated again due to differences with the sports minister, Sheikh Omar Fye, about the Berlin native's remuneration.

On May 30, 2007, the Tunisian first division club US Monastir announced the commitment of Heys as head coach for the 2007/2008 season. However, the club released him at the end of August after the second match day.

From March 1, 2008 Hey received a one-year contract as national coach of Liberia , with whose team he should qualify for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. After the contract with Liberia expired in February 2009, Hey took over the Kenyan national team in order to qualify for the 2010 World Cup or CAN Africa Cup in the third group phase. In Kenya there are disputes between the domestic league and the association over the release of national players, in the course of which Hey excluded a total of eleven players from the national team in March and May 2009. In November 2009, Hey resigned from his position as national coach for Kenya, as repeated attempts were made to influence the structure and attitude of the team. In the further course Kenya gambled away the possible Africa Cup qualification and also failed as the host of the CECAFA Cup 2009 in the preliminary round.

On July 1, 2010, Hey signed a four-year contract as the technical director of the Libyan Football Federation . On May 1, 2015, Hey signed a four-year contract as the sports director of the Bahrain Football Association (BFA). In November 2016, Hey took over as coach of the Sudanese club Al-Merrikh, but was dismissed in January 2017 due to poor results.

In March 2017 he took over the coaching position of the Rwandan national team, but asked for the contract to be terminated in January 2018. Antoine Hey has been coaching the national team and the U-23s of Myanmar since May 2018.
