Sheikh Omar Fye (politician, 1960)

Sheikh Omar Fye , also Sheikh Omar Faye and Sheikh Oumar Fye (born January 10 or September 13, 1960 in Bathurst, today Banjul ) is a track and field athlete from the West African state of Gambia who specializes in short distances . He took part in the 1984 Summer Olympics and led the country's delegation as the flag bearer. For a long time, Fye held the national records in the 100 and 200 meters. After a military career, he was a minister in Gambia.

Life

After attending primary school, Sheikh Omar Fye, a member of the Wolof ethnic group , went to Crab Island Secondary School from 1972 to 1976 , then to St. Augustine's High School until 1979 . From January 1981 to June 1983 he worked as a teacher in the Gambia Muslim High School . In the same month he joined the Gambia National Army , where he remained until June 1994. From January 1995 to July 1996, Fye worked as a field supervisor for American Protective Services, and from August 1996 to early 2000 with Byers Engineering.

In 2006, Fye became Head of Public Relations at the State House in President Yahya Jammeh's office . On June 13, 2006, he was appointed by Jammeh to the Cabinet as State for Youth, Sports and Religious Affairs . He succeeded Samba Faal .

He held this office until August 2007, when he was replaced by Mass Axi Gai in a cabinet reshuffle . In September 2007, Fye was appointed Deputy Head of the Embassy in Mauritania .

As the successor to Alieu N'gum , Fye became Ambassador to the United States on July 22, 2015, and was replaced by Ebrima Manneh in May 2017 . Fye was the Gambian consul general in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) since June 2018 .

On August 22, 2019, Fye was named Secretary of Defense by President Adama Barrow .

Athletic career

Sheikh Omar Fye played rugby as well as football and basketball . As a track and field athlete , he took part in the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane (Australia) and in the 1983 World Athletics Championships in Helsinki (Finland).

Olympia 1984

Sheikh Omar Fye participated in three competitions at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles :

  • In the 100-meter race , he was assigned to the preliminary round of group eight and ran the distance in 10.87 seconds. He finished sixth in the run and did not qualify for the next round.
  • In the 200-meter race , he was assigned to the preliminary round of the third group and ran the distance in 21.56 seconds. He finished fifth in the run and did not qualify for the next round.
  • In the 4 × 100 m relay competition , he ran together with Bakary Jarju , Dawda Jallow and Abdurahman Jallow . Fye ran as fourth of the season, which was last in the run-up with 40.73 seconds and thus could not qualify for the semifinals.

Military career

In June 1983 Fye joined the Gambian Army, from 1984 to 1985 he was at the Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst (United Kingdom) and trained at the officers' school. In 1987 he attended a Company Commander Course in Quetta (Pakistan) and spent 1991 to 1992 in Jaji (Nigeria) at the Junior Division Staff College. He was at Command and General Staff College , Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, in 1994.

In 1990 he took part in an ECOMOG peace mission in Liberia .

Sheikh Omar Fye is the grandson of Sheikh Omar Fye , who was politically active from the early 1920s to World War II .
