The woad-leaved Chartolepis ( Chartolepis glastifolia ), also called woad knapweed , is a species of plant from the relationship of the knapweed ( Centaurea ) in the subfamily of the Carduoideae within the family of the Asteraceae .


The Waidblättrige Chartolepis is an annual plant that reaches heights of 60 to 80 (to 150) centimeters. The stem is branched and winged at the top. The lower leaves are long stalked, narrowly elliptical, rough on both sides, with entire margins or indistinctly serrated, the upper ones are very narrow and sloping.

The flower head has a diameter of 4 to 5 centimeters. The shell is spherical and has a diameter of 2 to 3 centimeters. The bracts are glabrous, greenish and 8 to 15 millimeters wide. They have round, light-colored, serrated and slit appendages. The tubular flowers are golden yellow. The marginal florets are not radiant and have corolla lobes 10 to 13 millimeters long . The pappus is 10 to 13 millimeters long with feathery pappus hairs.

The flowering period extends from July to August.


The woad-leaved Chartolepis occurs in Turkey and in Transcaucasia on stony mountain steppes and subalpine meadows at altitudes of 1400 to 2500 meters.


The woad-leaved Chartolepis is rarely used as an ornamental plant for summer flower beds and as a cut flower. It has been in culture since 1731 at the latest.
