Samba Faal

Samba Faal (* late 1950s in Bathurst ) is a Gambian politician and former mayor of the capital Banjul ( English Lord Mayor of Banjul ).

Life

Faal acquired at the School of Journalism and Television in Berkshire ( United Kingdom ) a degree in journalism and mass communication. He earned a bachelor's degree in journalism from Roosevelt University in Chicago . Faal received his bachelor's and master's degrees in political science at this university.

Faal first worked internationally in numerous organizations before he worked for a few years as a councilor at Banjul City Council (BCC), the city council of Banjul. In 1995 Faal was appointed managing mayor and in 1996 elected mayor of Banjul, unopposed. In this capacity he was elected President of The World Conference of Mayors and hosted the annual general assembly in Banjul in August 2001.

In April 2002 Faal was as Minister of Youth and Sports ( English Secretary of State for Youth and Sports President) Yahya Jammeh to the Cabinet of Gambia appointed. In March 2005, the Ministry has been to a resort expanded (now English Secretary of State for Youth, Sports and Religious Affairs ).

He was one of the signatories of the Amman Message ( Amman Message ).

Faal was replaced as Minister in June 2006 by Sheikh Omar Fye . He then worked as a lecturer at the University of Gambia .

As a candidate of the Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction (APRC), Faal was elected mayor of Banjul in the local elections in Gambia in January 2008 against his opponent Femi Peters from the United Democratic Party (UDP) and sworn in in February 2008.

In 2013 he was appointed as ambassador to Senegal.

In addition to his master's thesis Flt. Lt. Jerry Rawlings and the politics of populism in Ghana (1988), which received attention, Faal was the editor of the student newspaper The Torch at Roosevelt University and won several awards.

As a writer, Faal worked, so he published At The Crossroads (poetry) and Political World Union , a political treatise on the world order.

Sports

A passionate athlete, he was a soccer player in the GFA League First Division , national basketball player and took part in athletics competitions.

For several years he was General Secretary of the Gambia Basketball Federation until 2002 , after which he became Honorary President of the Federation.
