Femi Peters

Ingram Reginald Femi Peters (* around 1946 in Bathurst ; † January 20, 2018 in Freetown ) was a Gambian politician and campaign leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP), which he helped found.

Peters ran as a candidate for the Gambian People's Party (GPP) in the 1987 general election , but lost to opposing candidates Ebrima AB ("Presseh") N'Jie of the People's Progressive Party (PPP) and Kebba W. Foon of the United Party (UP).

Peters ran as a candidate for UDP in the local elections in Gambia in January 2008. He was defeated by Samba Faal , the candidate of the Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction (APRC), who was elected mayor of Banjul.

Peters was arrested during a peaceful demonstration in Serekunda on October 25, 2009 and was sentenced to a year in prison and a fine on April 1, 2010. He was charged with "organizing a demonstration and using loudspeakers in public without official approval". The Amnesty International had called for the release of Peters', she as a political prisoner had classified. In the view of the ai, the trial of Peters, defended by Ousainou Darboe , was not a fair trial and relied largely on the testimony of four senior police officers as witnesses to the trial .

The 64-year-old Peters was prematurely released from custody in Mile 2 on December 10, 2010, without further explanation .

In mid-2017, Peters was sent to Sierra Leone as Gambian ambassador in the Adama Barrow government . He died in Freetown on January 20, 2018.
