    The United Democratic Party (UDP) ( German  United Democratic Party ) is a political party in Gambia . The party's motto is: English " Justice, Peace and Progress " = " Justice, Peace and Progress ".

    history

    It was founded by human rights lawyer Ousainou ANM Darboe in 1996. As a candidate in the presidential elections on October 18, 2001, he came in second place with 32.7 percent of the vote. The last parliamentary elections for the National Assembly on January 17, 2002 were boycotted by the party. In 2005, the UDP merged to form the opposition alliance National Alliance for Democracy and Development .

    UDP has been an associated member of the Socialist International since 2012 .

    President Adama Barrow , elected in 2016, left UDP in late 2019 to form the National People's Party .
