Remarks:
d 2002 as PDOIS

The 2007 parliamentary elections in Gambia took place on January 25, 2007 in the West African presidential republic of the Gambia . These elections for the Gambian National Assembly are the third elections of the Second Republic of The Gambia after 1997 and 2002.

The ruling Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction (APRC) party, headed by President Yahya Jammeh , was again able to win a clear majority of the seats in parliament.

Electoral process and districts

48 members are elected for the Gambian National Assembly , which meets in the National Assembly in the capital Banjul . Five more seats in the National Assembly are appointed by the President, so that the National Assembly has 53 members of the unicameral system for one legislative period.

The elected members are determined in the 48 constituencies of the country in a direct election with a majority system (simple majority). For the division of constituencies which is Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) is responsible, this is based on the districts in the Subdivisions of the Gambia . Areas with a high population density are adjusted in their division, so the capital Banjul is divided into three constituencies and the municipality Kanifing , with the largest city in the country Serekunda , into five constituencies.

There is no compulsory voting .

The vote itself takes place via glass marbles, which are thrown into a drum that is closed except for the slot as a ballot box . These ballot boxes are designed in different colors depending on the candidate. Experience has shown that this procedure results in a very low proportion of invalid votes.

Elections to the National Assembly must take place no later than three months after the election of the President.

Starting position

According to one estimate, Gambia had a population of 1,641,564 in 2006.

In the last general election in The Gambia in 2002 , the APRC won 45 constituencies, two constituencies were won by the People's Democratic Organization for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS) and one constituency was won by the National Reconciliation Party (NRP). The United Democratic Party (UDP) boycotted the election and did not nominate its own candidates. As a result, in 33 of the 48 constituencies, the APRC candidates were unopposed and were elected without resistance. Only Halifa Sallah (PDOIS), Hamat NK Bah (NRP) and Sidia Jatta (PDOIS) were able to prevail against a candidate from the APRC .

In the presidential elections in September 2006, Yahya Jammeh (APRC) was able to prevail with 67.33% against his opponents Ousainou Darboe (UDP) and Halifa Salla (NADD).

Election preparation

The nomination to the IEC started on December 4th, 2006 and lasted three days. It was planned that the candidates from the APRC would be nominated on the first day and the candidates from the National Alliance for Democracy and Development (NADD) and their related parties, i.e. the NRP, on the second day. On the third day it was the turn of the candidates of the United Democratic Party (UDP) and their affiliated parties. Independent candidates were allowed to be nominated on all three days. Nominations could be made in the administrative capitals of the divisions: Banjul, Kanifing , Brikama , Kerewan , Mansa Konko , Janjanbureh and Basse Santa Su .

The following parties nominated candidates
Political party number
Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction (APRC) 48
United Democratic Party (UDP) 29
National Reconciliation Party (NRP) 8th
National Alliance for Democracy and Development (NADD) 5
Independent candidates 9
total 99

99 candidates ran in the 48 constituencies and wanted to get the majority of voters who could cast their votes in the 989 electoral offices. 104 candidates had previously registered, but five independents had resigned their candidacy by January 16. The APRC ran 48 candidates in all constituencies. She was challenged by 29 candidates from UDP, the NRP sent eight candidates and the NADD five candidates. In addition, there were nine candidates who did not belong to any party. In five constituencies, the APRC candidates had no opponent, they won the constituency without resistance.

The "official" election campaign ran from January 10 to 23, 2007. The prominent politician Halifa Sallah (PDOIS), who runs for the NADD and received 5.98 percent of the vote in the last presidential election, wanted to defend his constituency of Serekunda Central . The other presidential candidate in the last election, Ousainou Darboe (UDP), did not run for the National Assembly in this election. Hamat Bah (NRP), ran in the constituency of Upper Saloum .

election day

The election on election day, a Thursday, itself is described as calm and peaceful, there were no incidents. Before that, however, there were intimidation and arbitrary temporary arrests of individual opposition candidates.

Of the previously 628,160 registered voters, 262,765 valid votes were cast, making the turnout 41.8 percent.

In five constituencies, the APRC candidates had no opponent so that they could win the constituency for themselves without resistance.

With 42 constituencies won, the APRC moved into parliament with 42 seats; another five members were appointed by presidents, so that 47 of the 53 seats belonged to its wing. The UDP won five seats and the NADD one seat; the NRP could not win any constituency. The independent candidate Ebrima Jammeh was able to assert himself against his opponent from the APRC.

Halifa Sallah, Hamat Bah and the long-time politician Kemenseng Jammeh (UDP) were unable to achieve a majority in their constituencies.
