The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) ( German  Independent Electoral Commission ) is the electoral commission in the West African state of Gambia . It organizes and carries out the presidential , parliamentary and referendum elections . The IEC office is in the so-called Election House on Bertil Harding Highway , until July 2010 the office was on Kairaba Avenue in Serrekunda .

Criticism of the opposition

It came under fire in the run-up to the general election in 2002 , which were held on January 17, 2002, by Ousainou Darboe , the leader of the largest opposition party, the United Democratic Party (UDP). He saw serious shortcomings in the elections and accused the ICE of allowing the ruling Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction (APRC) a campaign strategy that could bring them to an advantage. Since the Gambians are allowed by the regulations to freely choose the constituency in which they cast their vote, the APRC enables its supporters to be sent to constituencies that are traditionally strongholds of the UDP. For this reason, UDP boycotted the election and left the election to the APRC.

The IEC rejected Darboe's accusation as unfounded and as being made with a lack of seriousness and willingness to talk.
