The 1996 presidential elections in Gambia took place on September 26, 1996. According to one estimate, Gambia had a population of 1,192,548 in 1996.

Two years after the military coup in 1994, it was the first democratic election in the West African state of Gambia. The leader of the military junta, Lieutenant Yahya Jammeh , who had previously resigned from the army , is now running as a presidential candidate.

Jammeh was elected president with 55.8% with a term of five years.

Electoral process and districts

For the first time in the Second Republic of Gambia, the president was directly elected by the people.

Four candidates stood for election, one of them being Yahya Jammeh with his party Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction (APRC). He was challenged by Ousainou Darboe with his United Democratic Party (UDP) and Hamat Bah with his National Reconciliation Party (NRP). Former members of the government of the First Republic were not allowed to vote, only the People's Democratic Organization for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS) was not among the parties whose participation in the election was prohibited. So it turned Sidia Jatta on the PDOIS as 1992 as a presidential candidate.

Election result

Of the 446,541 previously registered voters, 394,537 votes were cast, bringing the turnout to 88.35 percent. Jammeh was elected president for a term of five years with 55.8 percent of the vote .
