British Gambia General Election 1951
The British Gambia general election in 1951 took place in the West African British colony of Gambia in 1951. These elections were for three elected seats in the Legislative Council ( English Legislative Council ), a forerunner of the House of Representatives ( English House of Representatives ).
The seats were won by John Colley Faye , Ibrahima Momodou Garba-Jahumpa and Henry A. Madi .
Electoral process and districts
It was the second time that representatives were elected to the Legislative Council.
From the one constituency in the 1947 election , two were created. The city of Bathurst (the former name of Banjul) became two members and the combo St. Mary Area (also known as the British Combo) directly elected a member .
The protectorate was not involved in these elections.

Before the election, the first interest groups were formed and the first parties were founded. The Gambia Democratic Party (GDP) was founded in June 1951 under the leadership of the Anglican priest John Colley Faye, who belonged to the Serere people . The Bathurst Young Muslims Society (BYMS) grouped around the Muslim candidate Ibrahima Momodou Garba-Jahumpa , and the BYMS became the Gambia Muslim Congress in 1952 .
