In 1952, the Christian Pierre Sarr N'Jie, from the Fulbe people , founded the former Gambian party United Party (UP) and was its chairman. The UP had its supporters in the Wolof and Fulbe with Roman Catholic faith. N'Jie campaigned for a federation with Senegal
In the phase in which the Gambia was heading towards its independence , the United Kingdom commissioned N'Jie from the UP a year later, after the parliamentary elections in 1960, to form a commission with representatives of all parties to prepare the country for self-government. In the second general election in 1962 , the People's Progressive Party (PPP) won, and 38-year-old Dauda (later Sir Dauda) Kairaba Jawara was appointed prime minister and N'Jie became opposition leader in parliament.
He was Chief Minister of Gambia from March 1961 to June 12, 1962, an office that was the forerunner of the Prime Minister's office. When N'Jie withdrew from politics, the UP became less important.
