Plays

Mrštík's best-known play is the realistic drama Maryša , which he wrote together with his brother Vilém. It represents a critical examination of the situation in Moravian villages at that time. It tells the story of the young girl Maryša, who for financial reasons is married to the widower Vávra. The marriage, into which Vávra brings three children, runs through numerous tensions and ends tragically. The drama illustrates the financial differences in the villages and the unequal position of women and men.
