British Gambia General Election 1962
The parliamentary elections in British Gambia in 1962 took place in the West African British colony of Gambia from May 22nd to 31st, 1962. These elections (also: General elections) were for 32 elected seats in the House of Representatives ( English House of Representatives ).
The People's Progressive Party (PPP) was able to get more than half of the seats. The second strongest force was the United Party (UP).
Electoral process and districts
It was the second time the House of Representatives ( English House of Representatives ) elected. The House of Representatives had a total of 40 members, 32 of whom were directly elected. Eight other members were appointed by the chiefs.
The number of constituencies has been compared to the 1960 election changed significantly. in the colony of Gambia, it consisted of the city of Bathurst (the former name of Banjul) and the Kombo-St. Mary Area (also known as the British Combo), there were name changes.
In the Protectorate, however, there were major changes in the division of the constituencies. The changes in detail:
- In the Kombo St. Mary administrative unit , the constituencies 'Kombo East' and 'Kombo West' were changed to Bakau and Serekunda .
- In the administrative unit Western, the constituencies 'Kombo' were divided into 'Eastern Kombo' and 'Western Kombo' and the constituency 'Foni' into 'Eastern Foni' and 'Western Foni'.
- In the Lower River administrative unit, the constituencies 'Kiang' became 'Eastern Kiang' and 'Western Kiang', and the constituency 'Baddibu' became 'Illiasa', 'Central Baddibu' and 'Lower Baddibu' and the constituency 'Niumi-Jokadu' divided into 'Niumi' and 'Jokadu'.
- In the MacCarthy administrative unit, the constituencies' Niani-Saloum 'were converted into' Niani 'and' Saloum 'and the constituencies' Niamina' in 'Niamina' and 'Lower Fulladu West' and 'MacCarthy Island' in 'Upper Fulladu West' and ' Sami 'split up.
- In the Upper River administrative unit, the 'Wuli-Sandu' constituencies were divided into 'Wuli' and 'Sandu', and the 'Jimara', 'Kantora' and 'Basse' constituencies were divided from the 'Basse' constituencies into 'Kantora'.

64 candidates ran in the 32 constituencies and wanted to get a majority of voters. The PPP came up with 27 candidates. She was challenged by 31 candidates from the UP and 5 candidates from the DCA. Compared to the 1960 election, significantly more independent candidates had joined a party, so in this election there was only one candidate who did not belong to any party.
In one constituency, the PPP candidate had no opponent, he won the constituency without resistance.

After the death of Michael Baldeh (UP), a by-election was held in the constituency of Basse in the Upper River administrative division in October 1965. The constituency was won by Kebba J. Krubally (PPP).
