The parliamentary elections in Gambia in 1982 took place in the West African state of Gambia on May 4th and 5th, 1982. These elections (also: General elections) were for 35 elected seats in the House of Representatives ( English House of Representatives ).

The People's Progressive Party (PPP) was again able to achieve more than three quarters of the seats. The second strongest force was the National Convention Party (NCP).

Electoral process and districts

It was the sixth time the House of Representatives ( English House of Representatives ) elected. The House of Representatives had a total of 49 members, 35 of whom were directly elected. Nine other members were appointed by the chiefs.

The number and division of the constituencies remained unchanged from the 1977 election .

For the first time, the president was elected directly by the people at the same time.

Election preparation

The National Liberation Party (NLP) no longer competed.

In the 35 constituencies, 70 candidates ran and wanted to get a majority of the voters. Among them, the PPP ran with 35 candidates in each constituency; it was challenged by three candidates from the UP and 19 candidates from the NCP. There were also 13 candidates in this election who did not belong to any party.

166,102 valid votes were cast.

In the election, the PPP won 27 and the NCP 3 seats. Five candidates who did not belong to any party won their constituency and thus a seat in parliament.

Easten Kiang 1983

After the candidate of the constituency Easten Kiang, Kebba O. Fadera (non-party), resigned and renounced his seat in parliament, by-elections were scheduled in the constituency in July 1983. Fadera wanted to apply for a nomination from the PPP. Jallow Sanneh (PPP) won the constituency for itself.

Sami 1984

After the candidate of the Sami constituency, Kebba N. Leigh (PPP), resigned due to illness and renounced his seat in parliament, by-elections were scheduled in November 1984 in the constituency. The only candidate was Sarjo Touray (PPP), so he won the constituency without resistance.
