The National Liberation Party (NLP) was a short-lived radical party in the West African state of Gambia .
history
The party was founded by lawyer Pap Cheyassin Secka in October 1975 in the run-up to the 1977 general election . But it failed to enter into an alliance with the main opposition party , the National Convention Party (NCP). Despite the establishment of joint candidates with the weak United Party (UP) in six constituencies, the NLP candidates were unsuccessful. During the election campaign, the organizer Alassan Touray was killed in a car accident in Jokadu.
Secka, who had already been defeated in his Sabach-Sanjal constituency, suffered a second defeat when a by-election was held for the constituency of Banjul Central after the UP candidate's death.
After this double defeat, Secka dissolved the party in 1980 and established links with the Gambian Socialist Revolutionary Party (GSRP).
