The 1977 parliamentary elections in Gambia took place in the West African state of Gambia on April 4-5, 1977. These elections (also: General elections) were for 35 elected seats in the House of Representatives ( English House of Representatives ).

The People's Progressive Party (PPP) was again able to achieve more than three quarters of the seats. The second strongest force was the National Convention Party (NCP).

Electoral process and districts

It was the fifth time the House of Representatives ( English House of Representatives ) elected. The House of Representatives had a total of 44 members, 35 of whom were directly elected. Nine other members were appointed by the chiefs.

The number and division of constituencies has been compared to the 1972 election changed slightly. With the renaming of the capital Bathurst in Banjul , the renaming of the administrative unit with the three constituencies after 'Banjul North', 'Banjul Central' and 'Banjul South' was completed. Three new constituencies were created, one through the division of 'Serekunda' in the St. Mary combo into 'Serekunda East' and 'Serekunda West'. In the administrative unit of Brikama, the constituencies 'Northern Kombo', 'Southern Kombo' and 'Eastern Kombo' have been reorganized and the constituency 'Central Kombo' has been created. In the administrative unit of Kerewan, the constituency 'Niumi' has been divided into 'Lower Niumi' and 'Upper Niumi'.

Election preparation

In October 1975, the National Liberation Party was formed under the leadership of Pap Cheyassin Secka . Before the elections in 1977 was presided over by Sheriff Dibba the Party National Convention Party founded.

The NLP formed an alliance with the UP.

The following parties nominated candidates
Political party number
People's Progressive Party (PPP) 35
United Party (UP) 8th
National Convention Party (NCP) 30th
National Liberation Party (NLP) 2
Independent candidates 2
total 78

78 candidates ran in the 35 constituencies and wanted to get a majority of voters. Among them, the PPP ran with 35 candidates in each constituency, challenged by eight candidates from the UP and 30 candidates from the NCP. The NLP, in an alliance with the UP, entered with two of its own candidates. There were also two candidates in this election who did not belong to any party.
