Presidential elections in Gambia 1982
The 1982 Gambia presidential elections took place on May 4th and 5th, 1982. According to one estimate, Gambia had a population of 692,658 in 1981.
Electoral process and districts
It was the first elected the president directly by the people previously in 1972 and 1977, the president was from the members of the House of Representatives ( English House of Representatives voted).
The election took place simultaneously with the election of parliament.

Two candidates stood for election, one being the incumbent President Dawda Jawara with his People's Progressive Party (PPP). He was challenged by Sheriff Dibba with his National Convention Party (NCP).
Election result
189,115 valid votes were cast. Dawda Jawara was re-elected president for a five-year term with 72.4 percent of the vote .
