The 1996 constitutional referendum in Gambia took place on August 8, 1996. According to one estimate, Gambia had a population of 1,192,548 in 1996.

Two years after the military coup of 1994, this was the vote on the new constitution and basis for the democratic presidential elections in Gambia in the same year. The main themes of the change included the parliamentary republic, strengthening the divisions and lowering the minimum age for elections from 21 to 18 years.

Of the approximately 447,000 previously registered voters, 383,937 votes were cast, making the turnout 85.9 percent. 70.37 percent had spoken out in favor of the new constitution, which allowed it to come into force.
