General election in Gambia 1987
The 1987 parliamentary elections in Gambia took place in the West African state of Gambia on March 11, 1987. These elections (also: General elections) were for 36 elected seats in the House of Representatives ( English House of Representatives ).
The People's Progressive Party (PPP) was again able to achieve more than three quarters of the seats. The second strongest force was the National Convention Party (NCP).
Electoral process and districts
It was the seventh time the House of Representatives ( English House of Representatives ) elected. The House of Representatives had a total of 50 members, 36 of whom were directly elected. Nine other members were appointed by the chiefs.
The number and division of the constituencies remained compared to the 1982 election and was slightly changed. The constituency 'Wuli' in the administrative unit Basse was divided into 'Eastern Wuli' and 'Western Wuli'.
For the second time, the president was elected directly by the people at the same time.
Election preparation
The National Convention Party (NCP) and the United Party (UP) formed an alliance for this election. The Gambian People's Party (GPP) and People's Democratic Organization for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS) competed in this election for the first time.

113 candidates ran in the 36 constituencies and wanted to get a majority of voters. Among them, the PPP ran with 36 candidates in each constituency, challenged by 33 candidates from the NP and 3 candidates from the UP. Because the NCP and the UP had concluded an alliance for this election, this alliance also entered into each constituency. In addition, there were 34 candidates from the GPP in this election, who were also represented in almost all constituencies except for two constituencies in the administrative unit of Kerevan. Five candidates belonged to the PDOIS and two candidates ran in this election who did not belong to any party.
