The Gambia Democratic Party (GDP or DP) ( German  Democratic Party of the Gambia ) was a democratic political party in Gambia .

history

The Gambia Democratic Party was founded in June 1951 as the first party in the British colony of Gambia. It arose from the movement " Committee of Union and Progress " around Reverend John Colley Faye in obtaining one of the two seats for Bathurst (former name of the capital Banjul ) in the legislative council in the election in October 1951. Faye was able to choose one Seat, like Ibrahima Momodou Garba-Jahumpa of the Bathurst Young Muslims Society , and in doing so, overtook Pierre Sarr N'Jie of the United Party (UP).

The GDP also received one of three seats when it was elected to the Council in 1954. However, the party's popularity fell and a tactical alliance with the UP was entered into in the mid-1950s; later, in 1959, with the Gambia Muslim Congress (GMC).

Before the parliamentary elections in 1960 , the GMC united with the GDP under the leadership of Faye and formed the new party Democratic Congress Alliance (DCA).
