Armed Forces Provisional Ruling Council

Armed Forces Provisional Ruling Council ( AFPRC ) is the name of the military junta and the transitional government on 22 July 1994 in a bloodless coup , the state power in the West African country Gambia had taken over.

The four young army officers of the Gambia National Army were led by Lieutenant Yahya Jammeh , 29 . They overthrew the Dawda Jawara government on the grounds of ending the alleged widespread corruption and undemocratic government. A fifth officer, Lieutenant Yankuba Touray, joined the group shortly after the coup and also assumed a ministerial post.

According to an announcement in October 1994, the declared state of emergency was originally intended to be held until 1998, but presidential elections were held in 1996 , from which Jammeh and his newly founded party Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction (APRC) emerged victorious and the business of government as President of Gambia continued.
