Cabinet Jawara VI

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Jawara VI cabinet was formed in The Gambia on March 11, 1987 by President Dawda Jawara of the People's Progressive Party ( PPP ) . The cabinet replaced the fifth cabinet, Jawara . It was in office until the presidential elections on April 29, 1992 , when it was replaced by the Jawara VII cabinet .

In the presidential elections on March 11, 1987 , President Jawara, who had been in office since April 24, 1970, ran again for the office of head of state. In addition to him, Sheriff Dibba of the National Convention Party (NCP) and Assan Musa Camara of the Gambian People's Party (GPP), who, as former members of the PPP, had held several ministerial offices and were both Vice-Presidents of Jawaras, also applied. Jawara clearly won the election with 123,385 votes (59.2 percent) ahead of Dibba (57,343 votes, 27.5 percent) and Camara (27,751 votes, 13.3 percent).

In the House of Representatives elections that took place at the same time , Jawara's PPP received 119,248 votes (56.4 percent) and provided 31 of the 36 MPs. The NCP received 55,251 votes (26.1 percent) and had four MPs. It had formed an electoral alliance with the United Party (UP), so that the UP received a seat even though it only received 3,210 votes (1.5 percent). Despite its 31,604 votes (14.9 percent), the GPP failed to enter the House of Representatives due to the right to vote .

In August 1989 the Senegalese President Abdou Diouf declared the Senegambia Confederation, founded on February 1, 1982, to have failed. This had provided for the union of the armed forces, the currency and the economic area. After the Confederation came into force on February 1, 1982, Diouf became President of the Confederation of Senegambia and Dawda Jawara its Vice-President.
