Cabinet Jawara V

The Jawara V cabinet was formed in The Gambia on May 5, 1982 by President Dawda Jawara of the People's Progressive Party ( PPP ) . The cabinet replaced the fourth cabinet, Jawara . It was in office until the presidential elections on March 11, 1987 , when it was replaced by the Jawara VI cabinet .

In the presidential elections on May 4 and 5, 1982 , Jawara ran for the first time in a direct election for the office of president, after having assumed the office as the previous prime minister after independence on April 24, 1970 and in 1972 and 1977 by the deputies of the House of Representatives had been elected. In the election, he sat down with 137,020 votes (72.45 percent) clearly against his former vice president and opposition candidate of the National Assembly Party NCP ( National Convention Party ) , Sheriff Mustapha Dibba , through the 52,095 votes (27.55 percent) were. In the House of Representatives elections that took place at the same time , Jawara's PPP received 102,545 votes (61.7 percent) and still had a comfortable absolute majority of 27 of the 35 MPs. The NCP Dibbas received 32,634 votes (19.6 percent) and in future had three MPs. Five of the seats to be awarded in parliament went to independent candidates who had received a total of 26,141 votes (15.7 percent).

In May 1984, for the February 1, 1982 with the Senegal founded Senegambia Confederation a Defense Council formed. In November 1984 the national armed forces ( Gambia Armed Forces ) were founded .
