Confederation of Senegambia
The Senegambia Confederation was a confederation of the West African states of Senegal and Gambia , which existed from February 1, 1982 to September 30, 1989. With the naming, the historical geographical term Senegambia acquired a new meaning.
The Confederation Treaty, signed on December 17, 1981, provided for the unification of the armed forces, the currency and the economic area. Various publications state that the treaty was signed on December 12th, 1981, whereas the text deposited by both countries at the United Nations names December 17th. The parliamentary language of Senegambia was Wolof .
The confederation came to an end when the previously feared internal political instabilities in both countries did not materialize and the particular interests of both countries diverged again. In August 1989 the Gambian President Dawda Jawara proposed rotating the posts of President and Vice-President of the Confederation between the Gambia and Senegal. Only a few weeks later, Senegal withdrew the first of its soldiers from Gambia, who were stationed there on the basis of the Confederation Treaty. On October 7, 1989, the confederation was formally dissolved.
