General

The name Deutsches Studentenheim comes from the fact that its construction was funded by the then Reich government in Berlin. The house has the slogan “officium meum est pontificium” ( My office is to build bridges ), the heraldic animal is the owl , the symbol of wisdom. In addition to many German students, it has been home to German and foreign students who study in Münster since it was founded. Breul is open to male students from the Westphalian Wilhelms University and the University of Applied Sciences , who can live here for the entire duration of their studies.

In addition to the in-house dining room, Breul differs from other dormitories in that there are events organized by tutors to promote the community. In addition, the Schola Breuliana should be mentioned in the musical field, which sings two to three times a semester at chapters vespern in the cathedral. The house newspaper is called simply "owl" based on the heraldic animal of the house. Sports activities are also offered regularly. Worth mentioning here is the weekly soccer game and the always very successful participation in the KSHG tournament. From the beginning, the house has been supported by the Roman Catholic diocese of Münster and run by a spiritual rector. In addition to the 97 students, the Sisters of St. Maria Magdalena Postel (SMMP) in the house, who managed the housekeeping for many years until 2009.

history

The facility was a thorn in the side of the National Socialists . The rectors were known for their oppositional stance, one of them copied the famous sermons of the Bishop of Munster, Clemens August Graf von Galen , in his apartment . At the same time, Albert Derichsweiler also lived in the house, who ensured conformity at the university and in the student associations and also organized the book burning on Münster's Hindenburgplatz in 1933 . Derichsweiler repeatedly came into conflict with the home management.

The house was built according to a design by the architects Franz Wethmar and Hans Ostermann . In accordance with the regulations of the time, the top floor of the side wing is home to the richly furnished chapel, originally with a pointed arched vault, but now with a barrel vault made of wood due to war damage. The house is in possession of works of art that originated from artists of the Free Artist Community Schanze and the St. Lukas Community. These include Ernst Hermanns , Aloys Röhr , Albert Mazzotti and Theo Junglas .

The former bishop of Münster, Reinhard Lettmann, supported the institution as a place for developing social skills and for practicing the differentiated perception of social reality. The association of old Breulians is also connected to the house and promotes it in accordance with the statutes.

Franz-Josef Overbeck , Bishop of Essen since 2009 , was rector of the home from 1994 to 2000.

On January 24, 2008, the house celebrated its 80th anniversary with a pontifical mass with Bishop Reinhard Lettmann in St. Paulus Cathedral .

On June 23, 2018, the house celebrated its 90th anniversary with a service in the Martini Church in Münster. The service was celebrated by Bishop Franz-Josef Overbeck from Essen.

On the night of August 4, 2019, there was a fire in the archway of the building due to arson. The garbage cans in the archway were set on fire by unknown people. Worse things were prevented by a police patrol passing by, who reported the fire to the Münster fire brigade and tried to contain the fire with fire extinguishers, while a policewoman woke the residents and evacuated them because the house alarm only went off a few minutes later. The fire destroyed three windows and several basement rooms were unusable. The repair of the damage lasted until December 2019.

In the future, the building will no longer be used as a student residence. The diocese of Münster is building a new student residence for the students.
