While Hermanns' early work still showed the influence of Henry Moore or Alberto Giacometti , in the mid-1960s he increasingly turned to abstract geometric forms. In particular, columns, cylinders and spheres were recurring forms in his work.

The aim of his artistic work in the 1980s was to make space , time and movement tangible in a concrete, i.e. non-illusionistic way. Hermanns called this "spatial constellations".

About a third of Hermanns' entire oeuvre is in the possession of the DKM Museum , Duisburg. In particular, Hermanns designed a space-related work for the DKM Foundation, which was realized posthumously in 2005. With the Ernst Hermanns Archive Foundation, the DKM Foundation has also been involved in the scientific management of the artist's estate since 1999.
