The museum of non-representational art in Otterndorf exhibits contemporary art by national and international artists. It emerged from Studio A and has been sponsored by the Cuxhaven district since 1976 . After a few changes of location within Otterndorf, it is now at Marktstrasse 10. It was given its final name in 2007.

history

Studio A goes back to Herbert Augat's private commitment. He initiated the first public exhibition in Otterndorf in 1961 in his private house on the Hornweide. He used the first letter of his surname to name the gallery: Studio A (ugat). This was followed by seven further exhibitions with a total of 14 artists until 1966. a. Fritz Winter , Max Hermann Mahlmann , Gudrun Piper , Otto Herbert Hajek and Almir Mavignier . Augat's accidental death in January 1966 ended the privately owned chapter of Studio A.

The idea of Studio A was taken up again in 1973 by the Cuxhaven graphic artist and photographer Walter Steffens , who proposed permanent documentation of the contents of Studio A for the public. For this purpose, the district of Hadeln made parts of the historic gatehouse in Otterndorf available. Klaus Staudt, born in Otterndorf, agreed to take on the artistic advice. Staudt, professor at the Offenbach University of Design since 1974 , took on the function of artistic advisor for exhibitions and acquisitions to build up a collection until 1998. The Land Hadeln district was responsible for the “studio a documentation of contemporary art”. Donations from artists who had already exhibited at Augat formed the basis for the first exhibition, which opened on August 6, 1974. By July 4, 1985, 35 more exhibitions followed.

In October 1985, Studio A was reopened in the Stadtscheune. Studio A was now run by the Cuxhaven district, which was founded in 1976 through a regional reform. With the reopening, the facility was given a new name: "studio a - contemporary art collection, museum for modern art of the cuxhaven district". With around 200 m² of exhibition space, the town barn offered better opportunities to present temporary exhibitions and exhibitions from the collection than the gatehouse. Another 100 m² were added in 1991 when Studio A was expanded to include the second floor of the town barn.

Another move took place in 2007. The new premises in a former commercial property offered more exhibition space and could also be adapted to the requirements of the museum. At the same time as the move, the museum was given its new name: Museum of non-representational art.
