history

During the time of Yahya Jammeh's presidency , the organization Amnesty International (ai) regularly reports in its annual reports that the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) detained prisoners , some of whom are political prisoners , for several weeks without contact with the outside world. Amnesty International is also aware of ill-treatment in the prison.

Shortly after the change of government, President Adama Barrows, the newly sworn interior ministers Mai Ahmad Fatty and Justice Minister Abubacarr Tambadou, made an inspection visit to the prison in early February 2017 and reported poor conditions. Conditions in the prison and cells have become overcrowded, damp and poorly ventilated. The hygiene conditions are poor and the lack of beds and mattresses was noted. Some of the prisoners are forced to sleep on the floor. Fatty announced reforms to ensure that human rights are respected and the rule of law is upheld.
