Gambia Prison Service

The Gambia Prison Service (GPS, also Gambia Prisons Service or Gambia Prison Services ) is the prison authority in Gambia .

The authority is responsible for the administration and operation of the Gambian central prison Mile 2 near Banjul (2010: 500 prison places), where the headquarters of GPS is also located, as well as the Jeshwang Prison near Old Jeshwang (2010: 200 prison places) and one Janjanbureh prison (2010: 80 prison places). There are also local holding cells.

The GPS is subordinate to the Ministry of the Interior . The number of prisoners for 2014 was given as around 1100 with an actual capacity of 650 places at the time. In 2002 the number of prisoners was below 500.

The GPS is managed by a Director General . Until January 2003, the lines were called Prison Commissioner or Commissioner of Prisons .
